    Dice Snakes and Vipers

by tmoerkens Updated Dec 15, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Normaly you will only see the non-venomous Dice Snake (Natrix tessellata). But do not pick them up Because as a defense it spreads a very bad smelling secretion from its cloaca.

95% of all snakebite are the result of people handeling snakes or trying to kill them.
Snakes will never come your way. So as long as you leave them alone you will be safe.
As far as I know nobody ever got bitten by a Viper on the island.

Everything you do has a risk, but one thing is sure. You will not get hit by a bus on the island.

    St Petka
    4 more images

Sveti Petka (St Peter) is a small 14th-century church on the island Golem Grad.

Unfortunately, many of the frescoes have been destroyed.

Some of them apparently deliberately, judged by the names and dates carved into the church walls.

See the link below for the interior of St Petka.

    By boat to Golem Grad
    4 more images

You can hire a boat (with captain) in Konsjko or Stenje, respectively a 30 or 90 minute trip to the island Golem Grad.

Note that it is hard to get to Konjsko by ordinary car, since the asphalt road stops soon after Stenje.

Note that you are allowed to navigate around the island, but to enter the island you need permission from the Galicica National Park administration.

There are guided tours available as well.

    Pelicans on Golem Grad
    4 more images

Golam Grad is a sanctuary for many birds.

    We even saw pelicans!

The trees that stand on top of the high cliffs of the island were black with birds at some places...

You should click on the pictures to magnify them and see the birds!

Golem Grad (Big City) is also called Zmiski Ostrov, Snake Island.

We saw many big snakes. I do not know if they are poisonous. Be careful where you walk and do not step on them!

The snakes are probably more afraid for you than you should be for them...They disappear quickly if they notice you!

    Golem Grad means Big Town.

    Zmiski Ostrov means Snake Island.

But Zelka Ostrov (Turtle Island) would have been appropriate as well!
