Monday May 30, 2011Midway through our Bus Tour of Western Macedonia, we had lunch in the village of Mavrovo at the HOTEL TUTTO.We started off with a generous salad and then some kind of stuffed pastry (pic # 4). Our main dish was a sliced potato and meat dish (pic #5). Drinks were extra. Very enjoyable lunch at an amazing location on the covered terrace of the Hotel. We even had some company looking over us and hoping to share some of our lunch. (pic # 3).

HOTEL RIVA RESTAURANT: STENJE

Lunch for our group tour was in STENJE at the HOTEL RIVA RESTAURANT.It was a great location, right on a beach. Our lunch consisted of a wonderful fish soup, followed by a fish dish which I think was carp. The fish was just OK to me as it was quite dry and overcooked.. I am sure it is hard to cook for so many people and have the dishes perfect. For dessert, we had a simple, but delicious, baked apple.

Ok, my Skopje page includes several Macedonian dishes, but when it comes to visiting Ohrid or Struga:FISH, FISH and again FISH,.... the famous Ohird trout, made on grill. Do not miss out on that one. There are a lot of restaurants in the town. However, I definitely recommend going to the village of Trpejca, about 20 kilometers from the town where you will find a small restaurant that serves fresh trout, prepared deliciously or maybe village of Radozda, near Struga! Good!In Stip, you could try the Pastrmajlija pie, dough with a certain kind of meat, sounds simple but there is a specific way to prepare it and it is tasty.Then, if traveling through the region of Kavadarci or Tikves you can try many different kinds of wine. Even though this is not France, Spain or Italy, Macedonia has a climate perfect for vineyards and production of good wine."FUK TAK" - near Dojran Lake. Great food.The...

Belvedere or Kaj Chetkarot: Simply divine

I discovered Belvedere, a restaurant located in the very centre of Ohrid, very recently. The place is amazing. The service is fantastic and the food is simply divine. Not at all expensive even though I dare to say that they can charge more. The food is really outstanding. Well, I was told that the barbecue is fantastic, especially the minced meat hamburgers, the one called "gourmet" and the "spicy" one. There are many things for vegetarians as well, one of them being "baked veggies". Fantastic.

be aware of your betacarotene intake!

Local food is really tasty. But you wonder why there are no carrots given whth your salad in the mid of summer. Red peppers and beans (boranije) are also not served. Tomatoes are good, but- will the amount of carotenes (vitamine A) be enough to preserve your skin from sunburning? I recommend you the following:Buy carrots at the market, wash them well, and eat some together whith the salad you get served, leaving the carrot top on the plate.Order grilled liver (very tasty, prepared whith garlic!) every two or three days, it is known to have vit. A as well.Don't trust the indication "mushrooms" until the end of september! Sometimes they fire some canned sliced champignons into the sauce and that were the mushrooms.
