 | FYR of Macedonia Shopping | Tips 1 - 8 of 8 | | What I like to buy in Macedonia is honey and mountain tea. Mountain tea is made of herbs that grow in the mountains. At the market they sell many different kinds of herbs that grow there, some of them are really rare. They have a special herb for every purpose... I also loved the Greek yoghurt (10% fat!) they have here. They call it Pavlaka, which also means sour cream. It's delicious on bread with jam! For local craftswork watch out for the "aid for artisans" project stores. Food-wise I recommend to try some local dishes beside all the fast-food stuff. The national meal is called "Tafce Grafce" (don't really know how to spell it). It's beans with a sausage (or kabab), very simple but tasty and filling. There's also these delicious stews with meat and vegetables. They're cooked in small ceramic pots, which are put into the fire. It takes a lot of time to get ready but it's worth to wait! Grilled fish is also quite good and cheap, the Ohrid and Mavrovo trout are famous for example. I also liked the "shopska salata" with grated Feta cheese, the Macedonian style Gulash with mushed potatoe, Pastrmajlija (pizza-type pastry in the shape of a boat), Burek with yoghurt and of course: KEBABS!
Macedonia is not an expensive country. You can get a good meal (including salad and drink) for around 5€. Mountain tea costs 20 denar on the local markets. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and Drink

A Macedonian passport is not the easiest document to travel with – which explains the number of Macedonians who have suddenly discoved their Bulgarian roots and applied for a passport from just across the border. The attraction, of course, is that Bulgaria is now a member of the European Union. With a little furtive investigation, you can probably get a Bulgarian passport through an agent in Skopje for only a few hundred dollars. Or so they say – old Cliffie wouldn't know! Theme: Other

Close to the centre of Ohrid and the Krusevska Republika Square (with a fountain and the 900-year old plane tree known as Cinar) there is a food market. Good to know for those of you who want to cook their own food, since in the supermarkets vegetables are hard to find! Leave a Comment Theme: Food and Drink

The Pazar is an open air market filled with fresh produce and local specialties for sale. Some peasants are there to sell their own homemade " sirenje" , a goat cheese, and some marinate their own olives. There is so much to see there, in the summer it is especially good because the smells of the sweet cherries and melons are very fragrant. If you like to cook, definitely make a stop here for the ultimate culinary experience!

In local shop you get bottle of mastika, the most famous is Strumnicka mastika. In bazar you get home made and much cheaper mastika...
Mastika is local hard drink, made of anis. It is similar to Greek ouzo, but has milder taste. Strumnicka mastika is the most famuous one. But home made ones are equally good either and you can get them at local markets. Before you buy one, you can taste it and see if it's good.
1 liter about 7 Euro. Theme: Food and Drink

If you come to Macedonia in september, the markets and streets are flooded whith peppers. I saw at least eight different sorts. In early summer, the red sorts are still not sold, but in september it is time to buy tons of them to make ajvar for the winter season. To classifie them, it is important to know if they are hot or mild (luto ili blag). Hot: luto mild: blag Those on the photo for example are mild in spite of looking as to be hot. Another speciality which I only saw in Ohrid were oskorushi (üvez in Turkish, Speierling in German), fruits like little pears which have a very aromatic taste. They are such consistent that they can be eaten also (for some people only) when they get brown.
30 denars per kilo, about 50 Euro-cent. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and Drink
