Any shops in Ohrid: Pearl

by Arkeolog

At the main street of Bitola there are many pearl shops. You can see lots of variety of pearls in their window. Different colours and different models. The Talevi and Filevi are two Ohrid families who make genuine Ohrid pearl necklaces, earrings and broaches; they carried over this handcraft down from one generation to another. Ohrid pearl is created from the fish called Plasica.

Ramstore Mall: Ramstore Mall At Skopje

by Arkeolog

In Ramstore you can see a lot of famous brands such as Mango, Hotic, Adidas etc. There's a good supermarket, ATM, exchange office, cinema, pharmacy, bookshop and a dry cleaner's. There are several cafés, of which the Diamond Bar, Stage Café and Mambo are the best. The food court has a McDonald's, Smiley's, City Grill, Aladin and a kebab stall. The Camarade news agent next to the western exit has a good selection of foreign newspapers. In Ramstore Mall, I found a little shop of Macedonian Tourist Board. There I found some magnets, hand made dolls, ceramics, mugs, boxes etc.

any shop or bazar: Mastika!!!

by picek

In local shops you will get bottle of mastika - liquor similar to Greek Ouzo yet better and milder. The most famous is Strumnicka mastika which is also sold abroad in Macedonian shops. In bazar you can get home made and much cheaper one - produces will give you a shot to try. There's one very famous song on Mastika which reveals full temperament of macedonian men. It's sung by Muharem Serbezovski. Cover was done laters by Culture Shock. I can only recommend you to try both music and liquors when you are in Macedonia. Mastika is local hard drink, made of anis. Strumnicka mastika is the most famuous one. But home made ones are equally good either and you can get them at local markets. Before you buy one, you can taste it and see if it's good. 1 liter about 7 Euro.

market places in any town, or just on street: peppers at the market

by merak

If you come to Macedonia in september, the markets and streets are flooded whith peppers. I saw at least eight different sorts. In early summer, the red sorts are still not sold, but in september it is time to buy tons of them to make ajvar for the winter season. To classifie them, it is important to know if they are hot or mild (luto ili blag). Hot: luto mild: blagThose on the photo for example are mild in spite of looking as to be hot.Another speciality which I only saw in Ohrid were oskorushi (üvez in Turkish, Speierling in German), fruits like little pears which have a very aromatic taste. They are such consistent that they can be eaten also (for some people only) when they get brown. 30 denars per kilo, about 50 Euro-cent.

Passports for sale

by CliffClaven

A Macedonian passport is not the easiest document to travel with – which explains the number of Macedonians who have suddenly discoved their Bulgarian roots and applied for a passport from just across the border. The attraction, of course, is that Bulgaria is now a member of the European Union. With a little furtive investigation, you can probably get a Bulgarian passport through an agent in Skopje for only a few hundred dollars. Or so they say – old Cliffie wouldn't know!

Market in Ohrid

by Pijlmans

Close to the centre of Ohrid and the Krusevska Republika Square (with a fountain and the 900-year old plane tree known as Cinar) there is a food market. Good to know for those of you who want to cook their own food, since in the supermarkets vegetables are hard to find!

What to eat and take home

by Natrix

What I like to buy in Macedonia is honey and mountain tea. Mountain tea is made of herbs that grow in the mountains. At the market they sell many different kinds of herbs that grow there, some of them are really rare. They have a special herb for every purpose...I also loved the Greek yoghurt (10% fat!) they have here. They call it Pavlaka, which also means sour cream. It's delicious on bread with jam!For local craftswork watch out for the "aid for artisans" project stores. Food-wise I recommend to try some local dishes beside all the fast-food stuff. The national meal is called "Tafce Grafce" (don't really know how to spell it). It's beans with a sausage (or kabab), very simple but tasty and filling. There's also these delicious stews with meat and vegetables. They're cooked in small ceramic pots, which are put into the fire. It takes a lot of time to get ready but it's worth to wait!...

Pazar ( market): Explore the open air markets

by ketrinche

The Pazar is an open air market filled with fresh produce and local specialties for sale. Some peasants are there to sell their own homemade " sirenje" , a goat cheese, and some marinate their own olives. There is so much to see there, in the summer it is especially good because the smells of the sweet cherries and melons are very fragrant. If you like to cook, definitely make a stop here for the ultimate culinary experience! Whatever is in season at the time Bargain with the sellers if they do not have a set price written on a sign
