Location: 7 km up on the Vodno mountain in the village of Gorno Nerezi . Built in 1164 (period of Byzanthine rule in Macedonia) it is dedicated to St. Pantelejmon , the protector of the health.

Just near the church it is lovely open(and indoors also) restaurant with marvelous view over Skopje .

    Lake Matka

Lake Matka is a man-made lake by damming the river Treska, about 30 minutes by car or bus (number 60) from Skopje. It lies in a steep ravine of the Treska Valley and is quite panoramic. It´s nice walking in this area!

There are several churches to be visited, which can only be reached by foot.

    Millenium Cross on Mount Vodno

by Pijlmans Updated Aug 28, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A huge steel cross, lit up at night, oversees Skopje from Mount Vodno. It is a good purpose for a short hike!

The cross is 66 meter high and was built in 2002 to celebrate 2000 years of Christianity. It is divided in 33 stages, each for one year of the age of Jesus.

We took a cab from the center of Skopje to the last big parking (Middle Vodno) before the top. Several marked paths lead to the top and the cross. During the trip, there are several very good panorama points that give a great overview of the Skopje valley.

Recently (2010), a ski-lift was build that takes you from Middle Vodno (Sredno Vodno) to the top. There are plans to make the ski-lift all the way from the foot og Vodno to the top.

At the top there is also a restaurant and a souvenir shop.

Arrived at the top, we had a nice cold drink in the mountain hut Dare Djambaz and hiked back to the center of Skopje down alternative steep trails through the bushes.

Summer at the lake ... Winter on the slopes ...

Many residents of Skopje have [or rent] a cottage on Mavrovo lake -- about an hour or so south of Skopje. There is also a ski resort and a nice hotel named Bistra as I recall! And a large national park that encompasses 300 acres.

The church was reconstructed in the middle of the 12th century. The frescoes inside are excellent. It is located about a 45 minute drive from Skopje in a small village called Sušica near the Kadina river.

Next to the road from Skopje to Veles near the village Vetersko, you can find the Monastery of St Jovan Veterski.

This is a working monastery where you can spend the night.

Next to the road from Skopje to Veles near the village Vetersko, you can find the Monastery of St Bogorodica.

The Monastery is beautifully located in the valley next to the Pcinja river. The Church is partially built into the rocks. Unfortunately, the church is almost often closed.

See my Veles page in the link below for more information.

  • Gostivar

    by mlliu2006 Updated May 5, 2007

Gostivar is about an hour's drive from Skopje.
It is a tidy and picturesque town. The town center is a shopping mecca (clothings, jewelery, knicknacks).

Wikipedia has a nice writeup of Gostivar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gostivar, which also mentions a nearby village known as Vrutok. In Vrutok you will find a clean stretch of the Vardar River where trouts can be fished.

A local friend took us to the best fish restaurant ("Riben Eestoran") in the village, known as Kaj Sime (see photo). This restaurant specializes in trouts, which are kept fresh in a tank. The trouts are served grilled and you can sit in one of the outdoor gazebos to enjoy your meal with a view of mountain woods.
