I’ll admit it, much of Skopje is not very pretty. In fact, most the area that was reconstructed by the Communists after the 1963 earthquake (south of the Vardar), is not at all appealing. However, once you get up quite high you can appreciate the other beauty of the city: its placement on a plain in what is otherwise a very mountainous and rugged country. Macedonia is, at least in my opinion, one of the most beautiful parts of the whole of Europe. Then again, I’m rather partial to mountains and dark landscapes. Climb up to the top of Skopsko Kale to get the best view of the city and its placement along the Vardar, as well as some perspective on the sharp contrast between the newer city and Cair, the old Turkish quarter that now seems more Albanian than Turkish.

Views of the new part of Skopje taken from the Stone Bridge over the river Vardar and from Kale Fortress.
The new part of Skopje is separated from the old part (Carsija) by the river Vardar.

This is were the parliament houses, on the street 11th Oktomvri, opposite the City Hospital.
It was built in 1933 by Viktor Hudak in modernistic style.
Also on this street are the Green Market and my favorite tea shop: Bilna Apteka.

The street that connects the Stone Bridge and the Makedonija Squarewith the City Museum of Skopje (in the old railway station) is called Makedonija Street. It is a pedestrian area.
On Makedonija street the statue of Mother Teresa, and her museum housed in the Bey's Tower can be found.

Hate it or love it: The Main Post Office, a weird huge concrete building. Communism at it's best?!
It is not far from the Stone Bridge and Makedonija Square, in the new part of Skopje, south of the river Vardar.

This is were the government is housed.
The building is close to the main post-office and between Bulevar Ilinden and Orce Nikolov.
Between the main post office and the government building is a World War II Memorial Statue for the liberation of Skopje in WWII.

This city view in winter and summer were taken 2 years apart -- the winter was 2001, the summer 2003. You can see that outdoor advertising has been added in that time. This view was taken from a building on the main square, Ploshtad Makedonija.

This is a view down the Vardar river. It's a little deceiving as therre really are big buildings on both sides. It looks so much prettier in the early summer when there is green grass and more water in the river!

The view from Kale. The tall building on the left is MTV [Macedonian television] -- the white building on the right is the National Theatre and the buildings in the foreground form part of the shopping areas at the entrance to the carsija.
