Between ploshtad Makedonija and even after the stonebridge, there are children (mostly Gypsies) begging fiercely. If you step further, they come closer and even put their (sometimes dirty) hands on the pocket you have your purse in. Careful whith this! Children may not go into jail for stealing, but they could take your purse whith the consequent problems!
Your hand should hold the purse inside!
If you like to give something, hand them some coins, but never something higher than a 10 denar note, or they will insist!
Beware of groups of kids who swarm around you and beg for money. They frequently try to make confusion and a distraction while one or more of them reaches into your pockets or purse to help themselves. Unfortunately, it's sometimes necessary to act mean, always be firm, and walk away. Downtown Skopje at night is bad. The old city over the stone bridge is a place to avoid at night as well.
When so called Roma gangs gets near you for money or anything else dont be nice be "MEAN" only angry face and dont smile. If they see you that you are a nice guy or a girl that is a problem, they know that u are a stranger and they will follow you until you give them money.
Dont be afraid of them.
Be careful if giving some beggar a few coins.... Hell be grateful, but try that other beggars don't see you have given him something, or else you won't be able to get rid of them, they'll follow you across town and they can be very annoying....
