Natasha & friends in Brajchino by Malecka ok, so a relatively big part of Macedonia is in fact, rural... And I've been hearing lately that people in some macedonian villages are slowly starting to actually apply the idea of rural tourism... It is worth it, since the country side is gorgeous. A friend of mine visited a village called Brajchino, towards the souther part of Macedonia, and totally relaxed her brain. ... Which is the purpose of choosing a slightly "different" destination, such as a village... Leave a Comment

Struga, a small town 15 km (9 m) from Ohrid, straddles the northern tip of the lake and is a captivating destination in its own right. Situated near the famous Roman Via Egnatia, Struga was known in antiquity by the name of Ehalon. Located on the coast of the magnificient and eternal Lake Ohrid and along the banks of the Black Drim river, which flows right out of the lake splitting the city in two halves. The city of Struga itself is located at the Southernmost edge of the Struga valley, which is surrounded from West by the Jablanitsa mountain, from East by the Mokra mountain, from North by the Karaorman mountain and from South by the eternal Lake Ohrid. Struga is an ancient settlement where traces of an old civilization dating from the Neolithic period can be found. The river Crn Drim flows gently through the town, as it does not want to disturb the visitors walking along its banks, thrilled by its crystal clear waters. The Drim flows out of Lake Ohrid at Struga at 695 m altitude above sea level, and leaves the country near the town of Debar. Crn Drim is 56 km long. Every year on January 13-14 a masked carnival is held in the village of Vevchani to the north of Struga. The carnival is an Orthodox celebration of the New Year's Eve (according to the old Julian calendar) highlighted by a mask procession of local groups. Leave a Comment

view from a castle in Ohrid by Natrix Don't miss the gorgeous, UNESCO-protected town of Ohrid! Some people consider it the most beautiful place in former Yugoslavia. When you see the lake and the mountains you can't help your heart beating faster... Ohrid used to be a center of the orthodox church, so you find hundreds of ancient historical chuches and monasteries in and around Ohrid. The architecture in Ohrid reminds a bit of Greece. Ohrid is the touristic center of Macedonia as it's situated at a very beautiful lake and surrounded by mountains (beware, in summer it can get quite packed as Macedonians from all over the country like to spend their weekends and holidays here!). The lake is among the cleanest lakes in the world and it's quite large, so it feels like a sea. Within Ohrid, don't miss the beautifully situated St. Jovan church near the tiny fisher village Carneo, it's the most famous spot in the country. And there's king Samuil's fortress of course and the old town... The best hotel is called "Inex Gorica", it's not very central, but has a great view and it's at one of the most popular beaches. To find a beach near the centre of town you should go to St. Jovan and then take the small path along the lake. There's several beaches to the left that are quiet and not very frequented, but may have more rocks and algues (and water snakes - not dangerous, but still scary!). Other things to do in Ohrid: take a boat trip on the lake and try the Ohrid trout (or other fish specialities)! Leave a Comment

Debar is found in the mountainous border country with Albania. Around 70km north-west of Ohrid, it lies at an altitude of 625m above sea level. Much of Debar has been rebuilt since an earthquake in 1967. Debar is surrounded by the high and wonderful mountains. Near Debar is located Lake Debar, which offers excellent opportunities for fishing and boating. During 19th century, Debar is known for its rebellions against the Turkish Sultan as well as its richness. In Banjishte are the health spas that contain such a combination of mineral substances, that can cure many illnesses: rheumatism, skin illness, female illnesses etc. The temperature of the Debar mineral water is 40C degrees. Because Debar is so close to the border our "guide" given a note of caution in relation of photographing. Indeed, we've seen many cars of armee belong the road in Debar. More than the half of population are Albanians. Leave a Comment

Some friends on the balcony by Natrix Bitola used to be the most beautiful and important city in Macedonia before. You can tell that from the many beautiful old buildings. The people in Bitola are also quite well situated. That's why you see a lot of stylish youth hanging around in the many street cafés all day. Bitola has the perfect size for a city. You can find everything there (museums, theaters, clubs, whatever) within a short distance. What makes Bitola especially beautiful are the impressive surrounding mountains. But because of that Bitola also has a very harsh climate. If you go to Bitola, you should definitely go hiking in the Pelestine mountains! Other interesting sights are the ancient greek ruins of "Heraklea" and the German cemetary, where German soldiers from 2nd world war are buried. Also don't miss the old town and the market place. Ohrid by AndreSTGT Lake Ohrid is one of the most beautiful destinations in Europe!!! The town of the same name is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site and it's not difficult to see why. Besides some old churches, there's a well-preserved amphitheater, a citadel with fantastic views over the town and the lake, and simply strolling through the alleys is a real pleasure. Ohrid is a very popular holiday destination for Macedonians and on summer nights the lake shore promenade with its countless cafés turns into a huge playground with festival atmosphere. Skopje, Old Town by AndreSTGT Skopje is one of my favorite cities in Eastern Europe. Though visually not of conventional beauty, it's a truly fascinating place with two entirely different faces. In the new "Macedonian" part of the city, they're apparently trying to create a city with Western flair, chic cafés and shopping centers, but it's all still in a state of imperfection, slightly chaotic and very charming. The Old Town, stronghold of ethnic Albanians, on the other hand has a much more oriental feel. With its Oriental bazaar, mosques and small shops, you might just as well be in Turkey. This part, however, is the more beautiful one with attractive architecture and narrow alleys. Leave a Comment

This "Shirok Sokak" reminds me of Paris. The way of life I mean. According to the data gathered by the chronicler Ami Bue in the year 1836 Bitola had more than 40000 inhabitants, while in 1912 the population had risen to 50000.It was known as "the town of consuls" and it preserved that name till present day.Today in Bitola there are Consulates of Republic of Turkey, Great Britain and France. Also every year a Film festival is held in the name of Milton Manaki and by now several Hollywood stars have been in Bitola. The young locals from Bitola are funny saying that they don't notice the stars in Bitola because they live their lifes as stars:-) Leave a Comment

by Karolina01 The most significant Macedonian film is "Before the Rain"(1995) directed by Milcho Manchevski. Filmed partly in London and partly in Macedonia you will be able to spot the Sv. Jovan at Kaneo church in Ohrid and the Treskavec Monastery near Prilep. Manchevski released "Dust" in 2001, an interesting story of Ottoman Macedonia. (Source: Western Balkans, p.234) Leave a Comment
