Prespa Lake is a stunningly beautiful and tranquil lake between Bitola and Lake Ohrid. Water from the lake drains via underground systems to Lake Ohrid. Located partly in National Park. (Tip in Progress)

Declared a park in 1958, GALICICA NATIONAL PARK is situated between the waters of Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa and consist of an area of 25,000 hectares. The lowest elevation in the park is Lake Ohrid - 695 m above sea level - and the highest point is the Summit Magaro - 2,255 m above sea level. The south border is also a national border with Albania. The flora in the park consists of 800 species. The Park also includes a large number of impressive caves.Attractive for its beauty , especially the area surrounding the Monastery St. Naum. The area also provide vistas of breathtaking beauty. Our bus driver stopped many times, so we could get out and take pictures of the amazing vistas (pic # 2).

Located in western Macedonia near the road connecting the towns of Debar and Gostivar, is the Macedonian Orthodox MONASTERY OF ST. JOVAN BIGORSKI. The Monastery Church, built in 1020 is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The Ottomans destroyed the monastery in the 16th century and was rebuilt in 1743, along with several Monk quarters. Expanded again in the period from 1812 to 1825.One of the Monastery's most valuable treasures is one of the three wood-carved Iconostasis created by the famous brothers, Petre and Marko Filipovski. The Icon has over 500 human and 200 animal carvings and also depicts scenes from the Old and New Testament. The other iconostasis can be found in Sveti Spas in Skopje and Monastery of Sveti Gabriel Lesnovski in Lesovo (which we also visited).Another valuable treasure is an Icon dating from 1020 with supposedly miraculous healing powers. Before entering the Church,...

Located in the village Rajcica, near the town of Debar, is the MONASTERY OF ST. GEORGE THE VICTORIOUS, (Sveti Gjorgi Pobednosev), one of the most beautiful Macedonian monasteries.Thought to be established at the beginning of XIV century, however construction of the Female Monastery's living quarters (pic #1) was in 1835.The Church (pics # 2 & 3) was painted in the period from 1840 to 1852. I have to say, the frescoes on the outside of the Church (Pics # 4 & 5) are stunning. We were not allowed to take pictures inside. Before we could enter the Church, we had to put a skirt on over our clothes. Inside the church, it was absolutely beautiful. It had such a sweet smell to it - perhaps from the candles.

The Bay of the Bones is a re-creation and archeological research area centering on a prehistoric pile dwelling on Lake Ohrid. Pilings and artifacts dating from as far back as 1200BC. The first underwater archaeological research was first performed in 1997. Since the discovery a settlement has been re-created allowing one to feel how such a settlement would have felt like. A museum also does an excellent explanation and has some great exhibits.

Monday, May 30, 2011Built in 1459 on the foundation of an older edifice, THE PAINTED MOSQUE or Sarena Dzamija, is an example of early Constantinople Style. It is located near the Pena River in the old part of the town of Tetovo (west of Skopje). This Mosque is adorned with an elaborate facade, with floral and geometrical motifs, making it unique in Macedonia. In the yard next to the Mosque are the graves of the two women (Hurshida and Mensure Hanuma), who provided money for the mosque to be built. The interior was quite plain and had red carpeting throughout - we had to remove our shoes, before we could go in.

Sunday, May 22, 2011The MONASTERY OF ST. JOACHIM OSOGOVSKI is near Skopje (100 km east), in the northeastern town of Kriva Palanka. We were able to visit this amazing Monastery, thanks to Valentina. It was founded in the 12th century and rebuilt many times during the ensuing centuries. Its Frescoes are especially characteristic of the 19th century. The Monastery complex has always been an important cultural, religious and educational center. It consists of the Church of St. Joachim Osogovski (1847 - 1851), a smaller 14th century church dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, a three-story dormitory, a bell tower with a charnel house at the bottom, guardhouse, new dormitories and a residency for the Head of the Macedonian Orthodox Church. There is also a small restaurant where Hans and I had something to drink. The most impressive wall paintings were done by Dimitar Andonov Papradishki. You...

The Village of VEVCANI is located 14 km north-west of the town of Struga and was one of the stops we made during our bus tour of Western Macedonia. Our driver parked in town and then we got out and started walking up the hill. Lots of ancient but charming buildings (pic #5). Then we saw the first of many Waterfalls for which Vevcani is famous. We hiked up more steps until we came to the biggest and prettiest of the waterfalls. It was so serene and the air was so fresh. On the hike down (pic #2 ), we passed by a tiny chapel (pic #3) along the path.

We accompanied Valentina on a drive to Skopje and to visit two Monasteries. One of which was the LESNOVO MONASTERY. It is also known as the Church of St. Gabriel the Archangel and also known as St. Gavril Lesnovski (circa 1347 A.D.) and it is located at the beginning of the village Lesnovo, near Zletovo and Probistip - in the north-east part of Macedonia. When we arrived, we needed to put on skirts to cover our legs. Then a Monk joined us to tell us much about the Monastery. We were not allowed to take pictures inside, but I can tell you that the Murals are magnificent art achievmennts from the 14th century. The Murals were painted in two stages: 1) in the time between 1341 and 1346 2) in 1347 1348 and 1349.Lesnovo Monastery is a very famous and important spiritual literacy center. Also the Church contains a tall and beautiful iconostasis from XIX century, carved in walnut and made by...

Part of our tour was a visit to the village of KURBINOVO and the simple but beautiful Christian Orthodox ST. GEORGE CHURCH which dates back to 1191 A.D. The Church is situated on the slope of Mt. Pelister about 2 km from the village of Kurbinovo. This is a very simple church on the outside, but don't let looks fool you - it is very important culturally, as the inside contains some amazing frescoes. On the Macedonian 50 Denar note you will find the fresco of Saint Archangel Gabriel from St. George.
