BITOLA - ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE HERACLEA LYNCESTIS

by LoriPori

Two km from Bitola town center are the remnants of the ancient town of Heraclea Linkestis, established as a significant strategic center by King Philip II of Macedonia, in the 4th century B.C. The town grew into a well-developed military and strategic center as it was situated on the most important crossroad in that period of time - Via Ignatia. The ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE HERACLEA LYNCESTIS includes the "Portic of the Court" which is the first 'building' that you come to. The "Aquaduct" leads to the "Terma" with its three 'rooms'. Next are the "Small Basilica" and the "Great Basilica". On the left is the "Amphitheater" Complex. There is also a museum with artifacts found on the site,Entry fee is 100 Denars.

VISIT SKOPJE

by LoriPori

The capital and largest city of Macedonia SKOPJE is the country's political, cultural, economic and academic centre. The area has been inhabited since at least 4000 B.C.. Remains of Neolithic settlements have been found within the old Kale Fortress ( pic #4 ) that overlooks the modern city centre.Skopje is located in Northern Macedonia on the upper course of the Vardar River (pic #3 ).The city developed rapidly after World War II, but this trend was interrupted in 1963 when it was hit by a disastrous 6.9 magnitude earthquake. About 80 percent of Skopje was destroyed. As our VT organizer Valentina had some business in Skopje, she invited Hans and I along for the ride. It was about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Ohrid. She dropped us off at the Triumphal Arch. From there we explored the area and crossed over the Bridge over the Vardar River. I took photos of the two monuments under the Macedian...

VISIT SAINT NAUM MONASTERY

by LoriPori

Situated along Lake Ohrid, 29 km (18 miles) south of Ohrid, the MONASTERY OF SAINT NAUM is an eastern Orthodox Monastery, named after the medieval Saint Naum who founded it in the year 905. Saint Naum was buried in the church in 910.Saint Naum is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Macedonia and an important pilgrimage place. The monastery was included in our VT tour "Lazy Drive to Ohrid via Prespa Lake". It was quite late in the evening when we got there and it rained most of the time we were there. But it still couldn't deter us from appreciating this truly beautiful monastery. The present day church was built in the 16th century. Of the original church, just the side chapel with the grave of St. Naum, still stands. Frescoes (pics # 3 & 4) were painted in 1806. The side chapel frescoes depict the life and miracles of St. Naum.Near the monastery, there is a small separate chapel...

VISIT OHRID & ITS LAKE

by LoriPori

Located on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid, in the Republic of Macedonia, OHRID is the 7th largest city in the country. Ohrid was once known for having 365 churches - one for each day of the year. Nestled between high mountains and the turquoise waters of Lake Ohrid, the town, with its Mediterranean climate, vast history and heritage, is rich in picturesque houses, churches and monuments, making it an internationally favourite tourist destination and also the site of this year's Virtual Tourist Euromeet 2011.Ohrid boasts numerous hotels in all price ranges and bars & restaurants which line the waterfront and the old town. In 1980, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid became a UNESCO Heritage Site. Ohrid is definitely a jewel in Macedonia's crown and Hans and I thoroughly enjoyed our 11 days there.

OHRID - ST. JOVAN AT KANEO CHURCH

by LoriPori

Monday, May 23Today we made the trek to Ohrid's iconic Church ST. JOVAN AT KENEO or Sveti Jovan Kaneo. Its beauty is in its location, high on a cliff with breathtaking views overlooking Lake Ohrid. Hans and I made our way along the boardwalk along the beach and came to the many steep steps leading up to St. Jovan. It was very tiring but sooooo worth it. The views were amazing.St. Jovan is a Macedonian Orthodox Church. The construction date is unknown, but documents suggest that it was built before the year 1447. The church was built in the shape of a cruciform with a rectangular base. Inside are well-preserved frescoes including a portrait of St. John the Theologian, patron of the church.

House of Robevci=museum

by Malecka

Ohrid still harbours some of the typical old Macedonian houses architecture. It's always a pretty sight and ... the house of Robevci (now a museum) offers an opportunity to get more familiar with the interior and exterior of these old houses. The house of Urania also. These two are masterpieces of the old town architecture from the 19th century.
