Top... ten list?

by Malecka

1. Take the mountain road from Bitola to Ohrid, and from that special spot on Galichica enjoy the view of the Ohrid and the Prespa lake...2. Try, at least once: burek, homemade brandy (domashna rakija) even though it'll burn your throat and chest, tavche gravche (baked beans), gyozleme, ajvar and white cheese, preferably from Berovo.3. Have a drink sitting at a table, at Aquarius' terrace (Aquarius is one of the best bars in Ohrid).4. Take a stroll through Shirok Sokak in Bitola.5. Visit St. Naum in Ohrid.6. Eat fish in the village of Radozhda.7. Climb to the top of the hill Vodno in Skopje.8. Go to a typical Kafana, for example Belvedere, in Ohrid and have the band sing you a typical macedonian folk song.9. Watch the sunset from Kaneo.10. Visit one winery (Bovin, Kamnik, Popov, Sopot, Popova Kula)

St Joakim Osogovski and Ginovci

by Malecka

Another great location worth visiting is the Monastery St Joakim Osogovski, located just a few kilometers from the town of Kriva Palanka, Eastern Macedonia. Gorgeous place. It was founded by Jovan (John) Rilski in the 11th-12th century. The nature around the Monastery is amazing.A very good idea for a day trip would be to go from Skopje to the monastery Joakim Osogovski and then on the way back, to stop at GINOVCI, a place that started as a simple fish restaurant, but has now evolved into a very beautiful property, with a small pond, a park and a fantastic restaurant. The food is great and prices more than decent.

Macedonian Wineries

by Malecka

In the last 10-15 years, the Macedonian wine production has greatly changed. This has always been a wine-producing country and the creating of this tasty drink is part of our tradition, but the private wineries have really come a long way in establishing a name, a brand and in promoting the wine tourism. The local (and most typical) grape is VRANEC. My favourite so far has been Bovin's wine Disan, which is actually made of Vranec, but it's barrique and utterly fantastic. There are about 80 small, boutique-type wineries, many are basically family businesses. I recently had a chance to visit Bovin, Popova Kula and Disan Hills... Loved it. A while ago I also visited the winery Elenovi. In any case, a lovely weekend can be spent visiting two or three of them, spending the night in Popova Kula, where the accommodation is really great.

Monastery of Sveti Jovan Bigorski

by Pijlmans

WARNING: Parts of the Monastery burned down September 2009. The church was spared. Keep this in mind when you plan to visit the Monastery! The Monastery of Sveti Jovan Bigorski (St John the Baptist) is located on Mount Bistra in the Mavrovo National Park in the west of Macedonia, close to the village Galicnik. Sveti Jovan Bigorski was first build in 1020, when an icon of St John the Baptist was found at the spot. It is still a working monastery, were you can stay the night for about 5 euros or some work. The church is renowned because it has one of only three iconostases that were woodcarved by the famous brothers Petre and Marko Filipovski from Gari and Makarije Frckovski from Galicnik. The iconastasis has over 500 humans and 200 animals carved, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Remarkably, many of the depicted people wear the traditional 19th century Macedonian costumes,...

Makedonija Square is a lovely place to wander around or just sit in the sunshine or drink at the openair bars and cafes. It was widened after the 1963 earthquake when the National banks was destroyed. At this place also is the Stone Bridge.

Skopje"s Famous Person.

by alectrevor

The statue of Mother Teresa is in the main shopping street, a feature of the statue is the crossed toes, said to be because she wore small shoes as a child. She was born Agnese Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Skopje to Albanian parents in 1910. She lived 18 years in Skopje before going to India for missionary work. She died in 1997 aged 87. There is a museum to her life near the statue.

Old Train Station

by alectrevor

The old train station was destroyed in the 1963 great earthquake, the remains have been turned into the City museum, admission is free but closed on Mondays. In my photo can be seen a small street clock of present time, with the large station clock stopped at eathquake hit, to the left can be seen the quake damage. The old station is situated at the bottom of main street from Makedonija square., and is a memorial to the over 1500 who died in the 1963 earthquake at 05.17.
