Monastery of St Bogorodica in Slivnica

by Pijlmans

The Slivnica Monastery with its Church dedicated to St Bogorodica (The Holy Virgin) is not very well known. To us, it came as a very pleasant surprise, located in the mountains about 4 km from the village Slivnica. When we visited, we had to walk most of the way to the monastery, but the building of a road was in progress.Inscriptions state that the church was built and painted in 1607. A nartex was built and fresco painted in 1612 and in 1645 the damaged parts of the frescoes from 1612 were covered with new paintings. The iconostasis has been preserved in its authentic state with its throne icons, the Royal Doors and the Holy Cross carved in wood. Outside, there is a spring of holy water with miraculous healing properties. It should work especially well for people with fertility problems. The monastery's lodging houses have been in the 19th century and are restored nowadays. There is no...

Marko's Foot (Markova Noga)

by Pijlmans

An imprint of the foot of King Marko can be found just before the border with Greece next to Lake Prespa. This is at the border at the south-east site of Lake Prespa.Indeed, just between the barrier and the police station, there is a small monument and a stone with a foot-like imprint. I believe the police station is also called Markova Noga.It seems that King Marko had really big feet!

Ohrid is a must!

by kaliopA

Want to see Europe's oldest lake??Surely you will head for Macedonia and find Lake Ohrid which is considered to be of Pliocene origin and is the oldest extant lake in Europe!!Chur, the oldest European town still inhabited, was settled in (modern) Switzerland in 3000 BC and the town of Ohrid was settled in Macedonia c3000 BC.Saint Clement (Sveti Kliment Ohridski 08.12) of Ohrid - Macedonian archbishop, ascribed invention of Cyrillic alphabet c. 900, according to tradition.Plaosnik is his eternal house. Today Ohrid remains a center of archaeological sites and discoveries. Ohrid is the city of 365 churches. One church for each day of the year. This fact has been evidenced in the 14th century by Evliya Çelebi in his travel books, and in the Middle Ages Ohrid has been called the Slavic Jerusalem.

Stobi, largest archaeological site of Macedonia

by Pijlmans

Stobi is the largest archaeological site in Macedonia. It is located near the village Gradsko, on the highway from Veles to the south.Stobi was built at the crossing of two important old Roman roads: the Axios Way along the river Vardar connected Stobi with Skupi (Skopje) and the Diagonal Way connected Stobi with Heraclea Lyncestis (Bitola). The site has likely been inhabited since before the 4th century BC. The Roman ruins date from the 2nd-6th century AD. In the 6th century the city was abandoned after a series of earthquakes.Have a look at my Stobi pages at the link below for more information.

Sveti Spas (Holy Salvation), Skopje

by Pijlmans

The Church and Monastery of Sveti Spas (Holy Salvation) can be found a bit south from the main entrance of the Kale Fortress. Some of the foundations date back to the 14th century, before Ottoman times. The church was partly rebuilt underground in the 16th century, since under Ottoman rule churches were not allowed to be taller than a mosque. The church is famous for two reasons:1) The iconostasis was made by three of the most famous woodcarvers of that time: The brothers Marko and Petar "Garka" Filipovski from the village Gari and Makarije Frckovski from Galicnik. The iconostasis is made from walnut tree and about 10m wide and 6m high, it took 6 years (1819-1824) to make it! Besides the many religious scenes, the woodcarving team itself can be found at the right side of the iconostasis, as some kind of humoristic signature. This team also made the iconostases of the Monastery of St Jovan...
