Monastery of Zrze, between Prilep and Kicevo

by Pijlmans

After a trip with a rental car from Ohrid to Bitola, Heraclea Lyncestis, Prilep and the Towers of Marko, we decided to drive back from Prilep to Ohrid via Kicevo, in order to visit the Monastery of Zrze. The Monastery is also called the Monastery of the Holy Transfiguration (St Saviour). The Monastery of Zrze lies above the village of Zrze. To get there, take the road from Prilep to Kicevo and turn right at the turn-off in the village Ropotovo, in the direction of Pestalevo. From the turn-off, you drive about 8 km on a small asphalt road. In the second village, there is a sign to a road to the left to the monastery. The sign might not clearly say "Zrze" but maybe shows another name for the Monastery. However, there is a clear church-like picture on the sign. From here, the asphalt stops and you will be driving on a unpaved dirt track with many holes for 5 km. After 5 km you reach an open...

Boat trip to the springs that feed Lake Ohrid

by Pijlmans

Take a trip by guided rowing boat to the springs that supply Lake Ohrid with water from Lake Prespa , which lies higher on the other site of Galicica National Park. The water is very clear and cold. There are 45 springs that bubble up from the bottom of the stream bed. The boats to the springs can be found over the bridge where the water from the springs flows into Lake Ohrid. They usually charge 100 Denars per person, about 1.60 euros. The springs are adjacent to St Naum, which can be reached by boat or road from Ohrid. Afterwards, you can visit St Naum, or Lake Prespa.

The Church of St Sofija, Ohrid

by Pijlmans

Build in the early 11th century as a cathedral church for Archbishop Leo of the Archbishopric of Ohrid. Displays a high number of well-preserved 11th century frescos. It was built on the remains of a former basilica and became a mosque and a warehouse during the Ottoman Empire (1400-1913 AD), during which the inside with its frescoes has been completely whitewashed. Most of the frescoes have been restored now.Entrance fee for foreigners is 100 Denars, about 1.60 euros.During the Ohrid Summer Festival, concerts are given in the church. If you have the opportunity to be there, do not miss it!Part of a tour through Ohrid described on my Ohrid page, see the link below.

Sveti Bogorodica Perivleptos, Ohrid

by Pijlmans

Sveti Bogorodica Perivleptos (St Clement´s Church of the Holy Mother of God Most Glorious) can be found close to the Upper Gate of the town wall. This late 13th century church was first called only by the second half of its present name. The St Clement´s prefix was adopted after St Clement relics were transferred here during the Ottoman empire. The relics of St Clement were brought to Sveti Bogorodica Perivleptos from the church built by St Clement that used to be where now the newly built St Clement´s Monastery Church at Plaosnik is, and where he was buried in 916.At the same time, when the original cathedral St Sofia was turned into a mosque, Sveti Bogorodica Perivleptos became the cathedral of the archbishop.By the beginning of the 16th century the cathedral had become a collection point for historical records and artefacts saved from other churches of Ohrid, and became the...

Antique Theatre, Amphitheatre, Ohrid

by Pijlmans

Build around 200 BC, just over 2000 years old. In use again during the summer for outdoor concerts and performances. Take a close look at the seats to see if you can read who owned the seat 2000 years ago!The antique theatre first was in use as a theatre in which tragedies, comedies and other plays were performed. During Roman times, the theater was reconstructed in order to serve as an arena for gladiator fights. Many Christians must have died here as martyrs! The amphitheater is part of a tour described on my Ohrid page, see the link below.

Woodcarving (Filipovski brothers and Frckovski)

by Pijlmans

The woodcarvers Petre and Marko Filipovski from the village Gari and Makarije Frckovski from the village Galicnik made three famous iconostases. An iconostasis is is a wall of icons and religious paintings, separating the nave from the sanctuary in a church. A fourth iconostasis of the team in Krusevo was burnt down after the Ilinden uprising (1903).These iconostases can be found in:- The church Sveti Spas (Holy Salvation) in Skopje. This iconostasis was manufactured in 6 years, between 1819-1824. The iconostasis is made from walnut tree and about 10m wide and 6m high. Besides the many religious scenes, the woodcarving team itself can be found at the right side of the iconostasis, as some kind of humoristic signature.- The Monastery of Sveti Jovan Bigorski (St John the Baptist) in Mavrovo National Park in the west of Macedonia, near Galicnik. Also the bishop's and prior's chairs are...

Demir Kapija - Iron Gate

by Pijlmans

If you follow the river Vardar from the town Veles via the archaeological site Stobi to the southeast, you will reach a point where the surrounding mountains force the river through the Iron Gate Mountain gorge. The valley between the mountains is maybe 50m wide. Demir Kapija means Iron Gate in Turkish and refers to the fact that invaders into Macedonia had to pass though this narrow corridor, and were often slaughtered on exiting the Iron Gate. There is a small stopping place for cars next to the road, in the middle of the tunnel between two rock towers. The pictures were taken here. You can do rock climbing here, as well as hikes.

St Gjorgi Pobedonoset (St George the Victorious)

by Pijlmans

In Debar in the west of Macedonia, close to the Mavrovo National Park, is the church and nunnery of Sveti Gjorgi Pobedonoset, or St George the Victorious. The nunnery, which was completed in 2001, can be found just before you exit Debar on the road to Skopje. If the main gate is closed, enter through the door a little further down the nunnery outer wall. The nunnery has a very well kept garden. The church itself is one of the best preserved in Macedonia, with many intact 19th-century frescoes. The church dates back to 1835, but is built on the foundations of a 16th-century church that in turn was built on the grounds of the 11th-century castle of St George.St George the Victorious is the same patron saint of England who slayed the dragon from his white horse in order to save the princess. The church contains the only replica of St George's original icon that stands in the Zograf Monastery...

Monastery of St Michael the Archangel, Prilep

by Pijlmans

The monastery can be found relatively close to the Towers of Marko, in a part of Prilep called Varos. The second oldest Cyrillic inscription in Macedonia can be found here, carved at eye-level into the far right pillar as you stand in the exonarthex. The church of St Atanas, without a roof now, is not far from the monastery of St Michael the Archangel.Follow the link below for more information about Prilep.
