Meckin Kamen Monument, Krusevo

by Pijlmans

Meckin Kamen (according to the Bradt Travel guide an hour´s hike uphill on the road to Bitola from hotel Montana, but we went by car) was the site of one of the battles against the Ottomans. According to the story, the Macedonians were heavily outnumbered and short of ammunition, so they started to throw rocks. The powerful statue shows a fighter throwing a huge rock. The Macedonians come here every August 2nd to celebrate the independence of Macedonia.See also my Krusevo page at the link below.

Archeological Site Heraclea, Bitola

by Pijlmans

To get to Heraclea, we shared a cab with some other people from Ohrid and were dropped off directly at the must-see archeological site Heraclea. The ancient town of Heraclea Lyncestis was founded by Philip II of Macedon, father of Aleksandar III of Macedon in the middle of the 4th century. Julius Ceasar has used Heraclea as a supply depot during his campaigns. After a large earthquake in 518 (AD) the inhabitants abandoned the city for other towns. The Heraclea site consists of an amphitheater, baths, basilicas and some impressive mosaics. In the very small museum you can get a drink and e.g. leave your bags during your visit of the site. You have to pay extra to get permission to make pictures of the site. When we were there in 2005, the site was "under construction" but surely worth to see! See my Bitola travel page for more pictures.Follow the link below for my Bitola page.

Cave Church St Atanas, Kalista, Lake Ohrid

by Pijlmans

The Cave Church St Atanas is not far from the Monastery Complex St Bogorodica (in Kalista), a bit further down the shore of Lake Ohrid. St Atanas is build into the cliffs of Lake Ohrid, and it is very small. At the time of visiting (2007), the church housed a wasp´s nest, so be warned :-)If the church is closed, the people from Hotel Biser might have the key for you.The link below takes you to my page about Kalista.

St Bogorodica Monastery, Kalista, Lake Ohrid

by Pijlmans

The Monastery of Sveti Bogorodica (Holy Mother of God) in Kalista, on the northwest shore of Lake Ohrid, has a church and a cave church. The monastery is build around the cave church, and the cave church could easily be missed if not looking for it.To enter the cave church, you have to enter the monastery, see the pictures. Steep stairs bring you to the little cave church, with frescos dating back to the 15th century.Follow the link below for my Kalista page.

St Atanas, close to St Naum, outside Ohrid

by Pijlmans

When you turn left on the road from Ohrid to St Naum, just before the beaches of St Naum, there is a small road leading to St Atanas. The turn is signposted.St Atanas is a new, small church/monastery on very scenic location, worthy of a short visit.

Statue of St Naum, outside of Ohrid

by Pijlmans

Next to the Monastery of St Naum (close to the Albanian border at the south-east side of Lake Ohrid) there is a statue of St Naum (835-910).Naum and Clement (840-916) were disciples of the brothers Kiril and Metodi, who invented the Cyrillic and Glagolitic scripts.Clement and Naum taught these scripts in the Monastery of St Clement in Ohrid, and later Naum set up another monastery at the other side of the lake, the Monastery of St Naum. Naum died in 910 and was buried in the church. They say that when you stand over his crypt and put your ear to the wall, you can still hear his heart beating. The statue of St Naum is made from an old walnut tree that stood on this place by the sculptor Boris Dzeparoski with a CHAINSAW in just 15 hours. The statue has been holy since 19-01-2006 when it was baptized.

Visit St Naum by boat from Ohrid

by Pijlmans

From the harbour close to the centre of Ohrid, a boat leaves in the morning (around 10.00 h) for St Naum at the south-east site of the lake. In the afternoon (around 15.00 h) the boat returns to Ohrid. For the exact times, check the signs in the harbour. Especially with clear weather this trip is very enjoyable. You have time to visit St Naum, and to stroll along the people offering -often religious- merchandice along the beach. After visiting the monastery of St Naum, you can for instance do a boat trip to the springs or go to Lake Prespa, see my other tips.If you have already seen enough after the devastating St Naum site, just enjoy the beach and the crystal clear water (that gets warmer the further you are from the springs).

Monastery of St Naum, outside of Ohrid

by Pijlmans

Close to the border with Albania, you will find the Monastry of St Naum at Lake Ohrid. It is a really stunning site, high above the lake.In 1799 the tiny chapel over St Naum´s underground tomb was built. If you listen very well above the tomb, they say that you still can hear the heartbeat of St Naum. Touching the stone above the tomb should make a wish come true. You can reach St Naum by boat or road from Ohrid. After visiting the monastery of St Naum, you can do a boat trip to the springs or go to Lake Prespa, see my other tips.

Beaches of Lake Ohrid

by Pijlmans

Ohrid Lake has a few quiet beaches but more and more beaches with music and bars. The local people are quickly taking advantage of the rise in tourism and start to exploit the beautiful shores of the lake. Parking near the beaches often is not free anymore and will cost you about 2 euros for the day. Most beaches consist of pebbles. An overview of the beaches along the lake, from Ohrid in the north-east to St Naum in the south:- Kaneo beach, next to the cave church St Bogorodica and St Jovan. Very rocky. If you walk south from Ohrid along the lake you will pass a bridge and military camp and find the beaches:- Gorica 1, relatively quiet beach- Gorica 2, with bars and music- Gorica 3, with bars and music- Slavija, with bars and musicThe beaches below are best reached by car, (mini)bus or bike. (Mini)buses frequently go from Ohrid to St Naum and back.- Metropol- Granit- Lagadin- Pestani-...
