  • The Nerezi frescoes

Just to clear things up: Vodno is the mountain, Panteleimon is the monastery and Nerezi is the small town:).This fresco is perhaps the most famous in Macedonia as an example of its period.

  • Remembering ...

One of the stone grave markers set in the terrace next to the church. It looks quite old, but I can't make out the date.

  • Grazing on Vodno

The people at the restaurant are not the only ones enjoying their food on Vodno mountain. Here are few locals grazing happily ;)

  • A summer view of Skopje

You can barely see Skopsko Crna Gore for the summer haze. The white "boomerang" on the right is the city stadium.

  • The entrance gate

Pantelimon's location lends itself to the holding of important events such as weddings and entertaining foreign visitors. As you can see the day we were there they were expecting a Chinese delegation. They were setting a dining area up behind the church overlooking the restaurant terrace.

  • A Panteleimon portrait

The monastery church dedicated to Sv. Panteleimon is located 8 km south-west from Skopje on Vodno mountain. The church was built in 1164.

Vodno Restaurants

  • Traditional Macedonia Food!

During the summer this restaurant spreads out over the whole area below the church. In the winter it is a much cosier indoor experience with a view of the church doors..The people in the picture are students from eastern europe. They are enjoying the food and good company in summer 2000. Good preparations of traditional Macedonian foods.

  • When it's cold outside

You can eat inside the restaurant :) Same food as outside, but your feet are warmer! The wood/stucco construction with verandas is traditional for the monasteries themself.

Vodno Off The Beaten Path

  • The Sharplaninec

The shar dog is a mountain sheep-herding dog. There is some controversy as to which part of former Yugoslavia may claim it -- but this young puppy was at the house right next to the monastery church.

  • Closer to Panteleimon

It was a freak March snowstorm and my friends were getting tired of stopping for me to take pictures:) So I bought them coffee at the top!

  • A small vineyard in the snow ...

While I haven't drunk the wine made from these grapes, Macedonian wine in general is very tasty -- for me especially the reds made of vranec.

The view from the house on the left!! What a great place to live -- although I'm sure it's several "switchbacks" away.

While each season has it's delights -- the winter is magical indeed! You have to eat INSIDE the restaurant though:) Seeing the mountain and the church in the snow.
