Hvannasund is the starting point for taking the old mailboat to the remote islands of Svinoy and Fufloy! If you have the time make this trip. It gives you a sight on how people live on those remote islands. On shore they are awaiting family, mail, foodsupplies and more.
If you take the bus from Klaksvik it brings you directly to the mailboat as the bus usually has mail that has to be taken on the boat.
If you are by car you have to go through two tunnels on your way from Klaksvik to Hvannasund. These are small one lane tunnels, first make sure you now which car gets to go first and also that you always give trucks the free lane.
p.s. check out the timetables for the times the buses and ferries go!
A journey on the mailboat M/S Masin is a must if you visit the Faroe Islands. You get to know everyday life on the remote islands of Fugloy and Svinoy. You will also enjoy great views.
The M/S Masin sails in the summerperiod everyday at 08.45, on tuesday, wednesday, thursday and sunday it also sails at 14.45 hours, and on monday, friday and saturday it sails at 18.30 hours.
Make sure you check the timetables. You do not need to book ahead!
If you return the people on board will ask if you need a bussride back to Klaksvik. We did and they arranged a txi for us to bring us back. Really excellent service!!
The mailboat sails to Svinoy and to the villages Kirkja and Hattarvik on Fugloy. It depends on the weather which route will be taken. We went only to Svinoy and Kirkja!
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Dress warm if you travel on the Faroe Islands. Especially if you make trips on ferries and other boats, be sure it gets cold on open sea. The mailboat M/S Masin has an upper deck where you really get great views. If you get cold you can go down. There is a small open place below, there is also a clean toilet! Also on the bottom deck is a warm inside area, where you can sit and have a chat with fellow travellers or people from the islands!!!
