Faroes jumper

by seaouk

If you can you must buy a Faroes jumper however, you will need to save up for one as the cheapest we found was £85. This may sound like a lot but they are worth every penny as they are warm, hard wearing and can be waterproof to a degree. If you can try and buy locally produced ones that have been made by local women rather than the main stream factory ones. Most of the money from the sale will then go back to the maker of the garment and this is how alot of local women make their money. Although if you cannot afford a jumper you could always buy a hat or scarf or some slippers. Upwards of £85

"Tax Free" Shopping

by MartinYarnall

A stuffed puffin will set you back £70.Otherwise shops are awash with local woollens.Beware of falling clocks!Given that a lot of towns have no restuarants or cafes it's worth taking some food with you on journeys (unless you're off to a large "city" such as Klakvik). The SMS shopping centre in Torshavn has a good supermarket amongst the plethora of fashion shops. This isn't the place for bargain souvenirs. It does have some relatively reasonably priced food outlets though (one of which is a burger king). There's lots of signs up for tax-free shopping for tourists. You need to spend over 300 krone in a single transaction. Be careful here though. You will need a refund cheque filled in which then needs to be stamped at the airport. Well worth doing as you can get around 25% back.Unfortunately, it's not possible to buy whale meat or blubber in the supermarket. We couldn't even find any...

Tøting: Faroe Islands sweaters

by pallm

An old Faroese saying goes "wool is the gold of the Faroes". From the Viking age up to this century, wool and wool products have been of major importance for the existence of the Faroe Islanders. Tøting is the Faroese word for “wool work”. In the village of Gøta you will find the knitwear factory Tøting, a small family business that has been buying wool, spinning yarn and knitting jerseys for more than a generation. The comfortable Tøting jerseys and cardigans are perfect for leisure and more formal wear. knitted sweaters and jackets 155 USD for a sweater, they ship free

Tax Free - not only knitwear...

by belabiah

The Faroe Islands are not members of the European Union. Therefore, every tourist can get around 20 Percent tax (danish:Moms, german: Mehrwertsteuer) back, when he leaves the islands. You only need a taxfree-cheque issued by the shop you purchased your things. And nearly all shops on the islands are issuing that cheques. And the big advance at the Faroese compared with other Non-EU-Areas: Not only souvenir-shops, or shops with extra-high prices for tourists are taking part in that system! Look for example for electronics, cell-phones and a new pair of trousers. You are not paying the price, an ordinary islander has to pay. You are getting it 20 percent cheaper! And if there is a discount sale: You will even get it 20 Percent cheaper then the discounted price!!! Have a look for everything!

Sirri: high fashion, traditional knits

by lisahurley

There are a few high-fashion knitwear shops in the Faroes that combine tradition with cutting edge. One such place is Sirri, in Tórshavn. http://www.sirri.fo/default.asp You can find incredible blankets, sweaters, hats, jackets, and other knitwear for men, women, and children. (They also sell wool yarn) They specialize in a semi-deconstructed look made from felted Faroese wool.

Wool !

by JLBG

To buy a pullover woven in local wool that has kept, at least partly, it's suint is a must. They are nearly waterproof (at least drizzleproof) and will last a lifelong !Look at this brand new one ! It is in perfect condition and seems to be brand new, doesn't it ? Actually, it was bought 25 years ago and I wear it every winter, especially for cross country skiing !! When I say it will last a lifelong, it is an understatement !

Töting: Knitwear

by zweiblumen

The Faroe Islands are famous for it's woollen wear and you will find examples on sale in various shops in the capital Tórshavn and the airport at Vágar. There is also the Töting factory shop at Gøta. Traditional Faroese design sweaters which will keep the worst of the inclement weather at bay and keep you warm too. They are not cheap, expect to pay the equivalent of £80.00 for a sweater

SMS: Shopping fun...

by lisahurley

SMS is the mall in the Faroe Islands. Yes, there is a mall. It's great, but don't forget to check out all the other little shops. SMS is a great place to go check out books on the Faroes, and see all the different goods available there. There is also a music store upstairs that has lots of contemporary and traditional Faroese CDs. Just like any mall, it has clothing stores and a food court too. The Faroese are generally quite stylish people. So it can be really fun to check out the clothes there.
