Vestmanna
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vestmanna is the largest village on Streymoy and has in 2004 1,300 inhabitants. It lies on the west coast and has a view towards the island of Vagoy. Vestmanna was the port of call of the ferry from Vagar and the airport. Thus all the traffic to and from the airport passed Vestmanna. That is over now. A submerged tunnel now connects the two islands and has replaced the old ferry. The traffic enters the tunnel from just above the village of Leynar and therefore the traffic is not passing Vestmanna any more. Vestmanna is popular with tourists due to the fact that it is a charming village but especially because boat trips are arranged from Vestmanna to Vestmannabjorgini. These are impressive bird cliffs and caves just outside Vestmanna. When the weather allows it several trips are arranged a day. They start from the ferry port and one trip takes about 3 hours.

    Kollafjørdur
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kollafjordur has in 2004 a population of 1,003. It is situated on Streymoy’s east cost. The village is ‘stretched’ so it is actually about 10 kilometres long in spite of its small size. In 2002, the Faroes' first factory producing pelagic fish for human consumption was open in Kollafjørdur. Its name is Kollafjord Pelagic Ltd. and, in terms of quantity, its main product will be blue whiting. The fish is vacuum-packed and frozen in horizontal platefreezers and packed in 20 kgs cardboard boxes. The catching grounds for blue whiting, herring, capelin and mackerel are within a fair distance of Kollafjørdur, which makes it an excellent location for such a plant. At full operation it will have a freezing capacity of approx. 1.000 mt per day. This is most likely the largest capacity in the world for a pelagic plant freezing only for human consumption.

    Vestmanna Bird Cliff Tour
  • Tip Rating:
  • By far the most fun tourist thing I have ever done in the Faroes. Our group was taken out in two boats. Our guide was fantastic. He could tell us the trivia, history, and legend associated with every crag, cliff, and bluff. We didn't actually get to see very many birds on this particular excursion, but apparently that's not usually the case. We did see a number of birds, especially puffins. The view was absolutely spectacular. Gorgeous green-topped cliffs and surrounding islands. We were taken right into the grottos between the cliffs. Fantastic! The boats are small though, and feel every motion of the sea, so if you are not comfortable on water be warned. Also be prepared to get prett wet! There was some splashing from the sea, but we also got rained on before going back to shore.

The main quay and city center of Thórshavn
  • Tip Rating:
  • The main quay is dedicated to trade. These large houses are trading houses and look very impressive with their several levels. One is selling fishing equipment, a basic need in the Faroe ! Another hosts a travel agency that organizes tours for tourists.

Gjôv is a town on the island Eustroy in faroe Island. There is gorge that makes a natural habor and the gorge is quite wide. Gjov is norse for gorge and this town must have been one of those most beautyful areas I ever have been to perhaps there is some prettier places. But Gjov is one of prettiest nature places on the faroe islands and perhaps in northeren Europe.

    Thorshavn, the harbour
  • Tip Rating:
  • Torshavn lies to the south on the east coast of Streymoy. From Torshavn there is a beautiful view over the sea and the island of Nolsoy. The Vikings founded the first parliament on Tinganes around year 900. The best view of the harbour is from an elevation. Thorshavn, is a very cute and quiet little capital. No traffic jam and if any, when the ferry is showing, it won't last !

A good "thing to do" in the Faroes is to take a bus, any bus, that crosses the islands to get great views of the beautiful scenery. The Faroes of full of fjords such as this one, with small villages at the water's edge. The countryside is the most vibrant green I have seen anywhere (except possibly the North Island of New Zealand in wet season). Virtually everyone seems to speak English, making things easy for many tourists. They also speak Danish, and their native language, Faroese.

    Study at the University
  • Tip Rating:
  • I took part in the program last year. I was hoping to gain a good grasp of the language as part of my studies. It turned out that the language studies themselves are kind of a joke. They taught us very little. However, they took us on some of the most wonderful cultural/geographical excursions. We did a fantastic hike from Tórshavn to Kirkjubøur, took historical/sight-seeing tours through Tórshavn, Kirkjubøur, and the northern islands, did the awesome bird-cliff tour in Vestmanna, and toured various museums. We had a number of culture and history lectures that were wonderful. The course also took place during the summer, which gave us ability to also attend the multi-day national holiday - Ólavssøka. I'm hoping that the program does boost its efforts to offer a good course on the Faroese language, but either way, the other experiences made the trip and classes well worth it. Check out their pamphlet. http://www.setur.fo/documents/20041122172447.pdf

Probably the #1 tourist attraction of the Faores is the Vestmanna Bird Cliffs. These are cliffs up to 400 or 500 metres high, very sheer, in which tens of thousands of birds make their nests. An excursion will take you by bus to the town of Vestmanna, where you get on a small boat that takes you to the cliffs. The cliffs are stunning, and you see and hear the thousands of birds constantly. Species include the guillemot and the puffin. In former days, and still even now to some degree, Faroe Islanders would climb down the cliffs from above to collect bird eggs, which are a great delicacy.

    Kirkjubøur
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kirkjubøur is the southernmost village on the island of streymoy. It is home to the ruins of an unfinished cathedral, a 900 year old farmhouse (which is part museum, part farm house - still in use today), and St. Ólav's church. The latter (a small white church near the ruins) was built in 1110 and was the main church of the Faroes Islands and bishop's seat for centuries. According to legend, a boy was born in a cave above the village and was raised at the bishop's seat. Later he became King Sverre of Norway.
