Saksun

by tini58de

Saksun is in the north of Streymoy island. It is a beautiful village in a very remote bay. It used to have a natural harbor, but now it is a laguna full of sand, so that we had to wait for high tide to even be able to reach it with our small zodiac boats. From there it was a wonderful hike up to Saksun. The coastline in this area is fantastic: there are grottos all around, which are lots of fun to visit....

Discover free Faroese Music in a uniqe shop

by bjorgdam

On the pedestrian street in Torshavn there is a very charming little music shop with live music on a daily basis during summer. And it is FREE. All the musicians are local and fortunately faroese music has a high international standards. The faroese music really grew on us in the shop. The people in the shop are really friendly and the coffee is also for free :) We learned that this is the only music shop dedicated to faroese music in the world. It is worth a visit :)

Gjogv

by davidcross

This is an almost unbelievably scenic village. The word Gjogv in Færoese means 'cleft' and it's a great cleft that symbolises the village. This is where boats go and return - from trips to the stacks and from fishing. There is a hostel and a cafe - with wonderful waffles. The road to the village is a delight in itself, whether from Eiði or from the bridge over the Atlantic.

Risin and Kellingin

by davidcross

These sea stacks off the north-west tip of Eysturoy provide spectacular views, both from north-east Steymoy and from the mountain road between Eiði and Gjogv. At the latter there is a FREE telescope giving a superlative view. I am sure you will have guessed that they were once a witch and a giant. They were sent by the Giants of Iceland to bring back the Færoes. Fortunately they made a pig's ear of the job - managing to split one mountain but not getting the islands one centimetre nearer to Iceland. Then, carelessly, they were caught by the Dawn - and hence were changed into stacks.

Eiði on Eysturoy

by davidcross

Eiði is a beautifully situated village in the north-west of Eysturoy. There's a museum, although we didn't go in, being keen to start on the mountain road to Gjogv before a very obvious deterioration of hte weather. It's possible for real people, though a bit beyond me these days, to go up a small mounntain and look almost vertically down on the sea stacks of Risin and Kellingin.

Bird Cliffs of Vestmanna

by davidcross

This is an amazing experience. There are two firms at Vestmanna running boat trips to the caves, stacks and arches near to Vestmanna. The boats carry about 15 - 20 passengers and twist and turn where you would think there was no room. If you didn't see a single bird, the scenery alone would make it a great trip.On the other hand, if the scenery were dull as dishwater, the bird life alone would justify the trip. There are innumerable arctic terns, surely one of the most graceful birds, fulmars, kittiwakes and gannets, great and arctic skuas, razorbills, black and common guillemots and puffins, one of the best entertainers in the bird world.Given both the scenery and the birds, you are not ready for it to end after two hours. It's not cheap but it's worth saving up. if you go to the Færoes at all, it would be foolish and almost sinful to miss this.

Kvivik - interest and solemnity

by davidcross

Kvivik is an idyllic village on a loop from the road to Vestmanna from Torshavn. There is a well managed site with the foundations of a Viking farmstead with most interesting information in English.A sight in the churchyard is thought provoking. This is a memorial to the crew of a boat that went down. The first five on the list all share the same surname and came from htis small village. However could such a small village survive such a loss and what dreadful effect did it have on the social life?

Haldarsvik and Tjornuvik

by davidcross

These villages on Streymoy are reached by following the road north from the 'bridge over the Atlantic.' Haldarsvik is a very small village distinguished by an unusual octagonal church - sadly it was locked so I don't know whether the interior is also outside the Faroes' norm.If you continue, you will reach Tjornuvik, the northernmost village of Streymoy. it is a delightful village with more than its share of twisting alleys and turf roofs.Between these two villages the island of Eysturoy is very close and just before the road drops to Tjornuvik, there is a super view of the dramatic sea stacks of Risin and Kellingen north of the village of Eiði on Eysturoy's north-western tip.

Saksun, north Streymoy

by davidcross

This is a really wonderful place that, perhaps more than any other on the Faroes, earns the word 'serene.' A bove the road is the small settlement and on the other side is the church, poised above a sort of lagoon formed by the sea, only a short channel between deep cliffs separating it from the open Atlantic. One of the houses has been converted in part to a museum.

Torshavn - Kollefjordur - mountain road.

by davidcross

The quickest way from Torshavn to Kollefjordur is by tunnel but this is one place, the only one we found, where the old road is still not only extant but in good repair. As you would expect, there are some splendid views, over the fjords of the east coast and to the west over Koltur, Hestur and Vagar. The three pictures are all taken from this road.
