Kirkjubøur - Roykstovan

by davidcross

This is a very old farm house, part of which is still used by a family that has lived there for 17 generations. The other part has been converted to a museum and shows numerous domestic and agricultural artefacts.

Sandoy - the gentler island

by davidcross

Sandoy is more gentle and agricultural than other Faroes and less mountainous. This doesn't mean that it lacks beauty. On the east side there is a fine corniche road between the exquisite villge of Husalvik and Dalur. For the west side, where there is no habitation, see my 'Off the beaten Track' tip of Soltuvik. Skopun to the north, reached by ferry from Gamlærett near Kirkjubøur has a good harbour and Sandur to the south with its ferry to the smaller island of Skuvoy is a most pleasing town. From the north there are good views of the minor islands of Hestur and Koltur and from the south of Stora Dimun and Littla Dimun. In the distance is the larger island of Suðuroy.

Nolsoy - use a ferry.

by davidcross

The (passenger) ferry to Nolsoy runs from the eastern harbour at Torshavn - but do check with a timetable in advance as it's not the same every day.Ideally spend a night there and go with the guided group at 22.30 to see the world's largest colony of storm petrels. These are on the far side of the island from the ferry and there is a large number of breeding puffins close by in the season. If you can only spend a short time on Nolsoy, go left from the ferry to the viewpoint on the lower end of the island (map near the ferry.)The website given is that of the Tourist Office but you should also see http://www.jenskjeld.info/UK_side/indexuk.htm - the site of the organiser of the petrels walk - which is highly informative on the islan.

Kirkjubøur - St Olav's Church

by davidcross

There have been several buildings on the site - all churches - and the first was built in the 12th century. So much is clear but I have found some contradictions about the age of the present one. Some beautifully decorated pew ends that were once in one of the buildings can now be seen in the Torshavn Historical Museum, having arrived there after a long spell in Copenhagen. The interior is now very plain and it is only the pictures or other ornaments that make recognisable features of different churches.

Kirkjubøur - Magnus Cathedral

by davidcross

Kirkjubøur is a fine little village in south-west Streymoy. At one time, amazingly, it was the most important settlement in the Faroes in spite of not having a particularly good anchorage. Anyway, it was here that the Magnos Cathedral was started - started but never finished. The money ran out before it could be roofed. The surprising thing is that it got as far as it did.Now [summer 2008] it is planned to complete the building and the first stage is to dry it out - so the walls are covered by a sort of tarpaulin!

Tinganes, Torshavn

by davidcross

Tinganes is a tiny peninsula separating the east and west harbours in Torshavn. It was obviously a substantial part of the old town and even now contains the government offices. Anything less like Whitehall in London would be hard to imagine! The Prime Minister's Office is in a 'street' of turf roofed houses.I do realise that my second photo is of appalling quality but I think it is still both informative and funny.

Historical Museum, Torshavn.

by davidcross

This is a fine building with an interesting layout inside. Part of the ground flor is devoted to the current exhibition. I got much more from the basement, where there are diferent types of fishing/whaling boats and pew ends once taken to Copenhagen from an earlier church of St Olav's, Kirkjubøur.Photography not allowed.I have encountered difficulty getting any contact details at all and I don't have the linguistic skills to work out which is which for this and the outdoor museum but I think the telephone number covers both and I'm sure they will speak English. The website given is in Faroese or Danish only.Addresses: Brekkutún 6 and Kúrdalsvegur 2

Art Museum, Torshavn

by davidcross

The people of the Faroes are proud of their artists, particularly painters, and justifiably so. This is a fine purpose-built place, surrounded by sculptures, in one of the wooded area of Torshavn. A number of Faroese painters have rooms of their pictures. I particularly liked some of the funeral paintings by Mykines and the work of Ruth Smith - not English in spite of her name.Photography inside the museum is not allowed.

Outdoor Museum, Torshavn

by davidcross

Tickets allow entry to this museum and the main museum on the same day - though we were allowed to use our ticket on different days. This museum is unlike other Scandinavian outdoor museums I have visitedin that none of the buildings have been brought in. It is an old farmstead kept in situ; farm house with a sort of 'grannie flat,' various agricultural work sheds and boat houses. One of my favourite items was the phone in the main house [photo below.]

Nordic House - Torshavn

by davidcross

This building was created at the expense of the Nordic Council, when Faroes became an Associate member. It is still being extended and there are a number of decorative feaures outside.Inside there is a cafe, an auditorium and a recital area. There are usually pictures on exhibit for sale.
