Tórshavn

by travelfrosch

Tórshavn is the capital of the Faroe Islands and its largest community. With its restaurants, shops, pubs, and facilities, it makes for a good home base for touring or hiking. Tórshavn is the hub for the national bus service. It is also the arrival point for the Smyril-Line international ferry from Iceland, the Shetland Islands, Denmark, and Norway. For more information, take a look at my Tórshavn page.

Mykines

by travelfrosch

Perhaps the most delightful destination in the Faroes is the westernmost island, Mykines. While it is rather difficult to get to, it is definitely worth it. There are a number of hiking trails which provide tremendous views, as well as allow you to get quite close to sheep, pink-footed geese... and puffin. especially puffin. For more information and photos, take a look at my Mykines page.

Nólsoy

by travelfrosch

A short ferry ride from Tórshavn is the bucolic island of Nólsoy. A quiet fishing village provides a springboard for a number of hikes and walks, affording tremendous views of the surrounding islands. It is possible to stay overnight here if you wish. Opportunities abound for viewing puffin and storm petrels as well; the Nólsoy tourist office has the details if you're interested. For further information, take a look at my Nólsoy page.

in the Faroe islands alot of what you do depends on you using your imagination, there's not alot to do in front of you but if you put in a bit of effort and thought into it you can have an amazing stay. the first thing you should do is meet some of the people there. they are all incredible and lovely and very willing to show you how to have an incredible time in the faroe islands. you should definatly stay in torshavn the capital but visit other places too. like sorvagur. it's amazing for walkers, climbers, photography and just relaxing.

Vestmanna Bird Cliffs

by glenn57

Probably the #1 tourist attraction of the Faores is the Vestmanna Bird Cliffs. These are cliffs up to 400 or 500 metres high, very sheer, in which tens of thousands of birds make their nests. An excursion will take you by bus to the town of Vestmanna, where you get on a small boat that takes you to the cliffs. The cliffs are stunning, and you see and hear the thousands of birds constantly. Species include the guillemot and the puffin. In former days, and still even now to some degree, Faroe Islanders would climb down the cliffs from above to collect bird eggs, which are a great delicacy.

Green Hills of the Faroes

by glenn57

A good "thing to do" in the Faroes is to take a bus, any bus, that crosses the islands to get great views of the beautiful scenery. The Faroes of full of fjords such as this one, with small villages at the water's edge. The countryside is the most vibrant green I have seen anywhere (except possibly the North Island of New Zealand in wet season). Virtually everyone seems to speak English, making things easy for many tourists. They also speak Danish, and their native language, Faroese.

Torshavn - old town

by glenn57

The old town of Torshavn is small but full of gems. The homes are built of wood, and many have the traditional sod roofs with grasses growing on them. There is very little vehicular traffic, which adds to its charm.

Torshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, is a very pretty little town of around 30,000 inhabitants. It is flanked by hills, so you can climb the streets that goo up thr hills to get the view seen here.

Saksun

by Fiskaaen

Saksun is a great nature pearl of the faroe islands. Lake Pourin and the mountains peaks makes Saksun a great place to vist. There is cairn paths on the Saksun area where there is an old church. The church is old and is on a platou and you should not walk to far out of the platou.
