The main quay and city center of Thórshavn

by JLBG

The main quay is dedicated to trade. These large houses are trading houses and look very impressive with their several levels. One is selling fishing equipment, a basic need in the Faroe ! Another hosts a travel agency that organizes tours for tourists.

Arrival in Thorshavn

by JLBG

Upon arrival in Thorshavn, the first sight is of a misty landscape. This gives a smooth and mysterious look to the town. The lage dark shape on the left is the church. In 2004, the population of Thorshavn was 12,620.

Fishing boat in Vestmanna harbour

by JLBG

The fishing boats look strange with their small sheet-iron sails. I have asked to some one in the harbor and actually, they are not used as sails but are there to help stabilizing the ship when they fish in a rough sea, which happens everyday !

Good bye, Torshavn !

by JLBG

Leaving Torshavn under the mist ! Just like upon arrival ! However, as you have seen, there can be bright periods od sun in the Faroe, but they never last long ! It is fair to say that, at least in Summer, mist or rain never last long neither !

Thorshavn, the harbour

by JLBG

Torshavn lies to the south on the east coast of Streymoy. From Torshavn there is a beautiful view over the sea and the island of Nolsoy. The Vikings founded the first parliament on Tinganes around year 900.The best view of the harbour is from an elevation. Thorshavn, is a very cute and quiet little capital. No traffic jam and if any, when the ferry is showing, it won't last !

Kollafjørdur

by JLBG

Kollafjordur has in 2004 a population of 1,003. It is situated on Streymoy’s east cost. The village is ‘stretched’ so it is actually about 10 kilometres long in spite of its small size.In 2002, the Faroes' first factory producing pelagic fish for human consumption was open in Kollafjørdur. Its name is Kollafjord Pelagic Ltd. and, in terms of quantity, its main product will be blue whiting. The fish is vacuum-packed and frozen in horizontal platefreezers and packed in 20 kgs cardboard boxes. The catching grounds for blue whiting, herring, capelin and mackerel are within a fair distance of Kollafjørdur, which makes it an excellent location for such a plant. At full operation it will have a freezing capacity of approx. 1.000 mt per day. This is most likely the largest capacity in the world for a pelagic plant freezing only for human consumption.

Kollafjørdur, the parish church

by JLBG

The parish church of Kollafjørdur is characteristic and was built in 1837. It's peat cover disappears under grass. The walls are made of wood and are painted in black, which allow even the slightest sun beams to bring some heat.

Vestmanna

by JLBG

Vestmanna is the largest village on Streymoy and has in 2004 1,300 inhabitants. It lies on the west coast and has a view towards the island of Vagoy.Vestmanna was the port of call of the ferry from Vagar and the airport. Thus all the traffic to and from the airport passed Vestmanna. That is over now. A submerged tunnel now connects the two islands and has replaced the old ferry. The traffic enters the tunnel from just above the village of Leynar and therefore the traffic is not passing Vestmanna any more.Vestmanna is popular with tourists due to the fact that it is a charming village but especially because boat trips are arranged from Vestmanna to Vestmannabjorgini. These are impressive bird cliffs and caves just outside Vestmanna. When the weather allows it several trips are arranged a day. They start from the ferry port and one trip takes about 3 hours.

Thorshavn, close to the city center

by JLBG

Old houses are covered with peat. After a few seasons, grass grows on the peat and the roofs look like meadows. This gives a very good insulation. In Torshavn, there remains a few houses with this type of cover in Tinganes, close to the center.

Vestmanna, the harbour

by JLBG

This is a typical aspect of the weather on the Feroe islands. One part of the sky is bright blue and the mountain is flooded with sunlight. Another part of the sky is full of heavy clouds and in a few minutes, it will be drizzling.
