I decided to have late lunch at the hotel I was staying in - I discovered they have very strict rules about the times you can order certain things from the menu. The lunch menu is the lunch menu and by default so is the dinner menu - don't make the mistake of thinking they will cook to order.
The staff were friendly and all quite young.
It should be noted that the hotel and restaurant are a non smoking complex. the ABA fire alarm system is connected to the fire station. If you are a smoker and you set it off, you will be charged DKK 2,500.

ALV was founded in1956 by the General Accident Insurance Group (FUR) and acts as an independent institution. The main aim is to help people with limited opportunities for finding work to produce various homemade Faroese handicrafts. these items are woven, carved and knitted - limited numbers of each are held in stock.
There is a cafe which seels good coffee and a range of cakes and pastries - they also have an internet facility for customers.
President Bill Clinton called in for coffee when he visited the Faroes in October 2007.

Excellent Food! Excellent Staff! Excellent Experience!
It was a rather wet Friday evening - and the whole city centre seemed to be a little quiet. The food was excellent and the waiting staff wonderful - professional, friendly and very attentive. I think I can safely say that this was one of the best meals and dining experiences I have recently enjoyed.

It was a saturday afternoon, and I had previously visited Baresso in Copenhagen. This was a more intersting experience it was located on one floor and had similar furniture although there was significantly more open space and soft seating.
Great staff and good atmosphere.

Thursday 11.00-24.00
Friday 11.00-02.00

It was a sunday night, and I had several options to consider to eat. I decided it would be Rio Bravo. It was close to the hotel and other venues (isn't everything in Tórshavn).
It was fairly early, but there were 10 or so people already eating when I arrived.
monday-sunday: 11.30-24.00
Favorite Dish: Peppered Steak - and steaks generally.

Here's a motto for you: "Brasserie Hvonn: Faroese-American cuisine." Hmm...
But anyway, despite the odd motto, the food is quite good. Service is quick and efficient, and the portions are quite large. This place is located inside the Hotel Tórshavn, so you can expect plenty of tourists here. However, the majority of patrons were locals when we visitied, indicating this could be a popular lunch-hour eatery for Tórshavn workers.
Favorite Dish: There is a reasonable daily special, which is what most of the locals were enjoying. But we weren't much in the mood for Beef Stroganoff. I had a pizza, which was reasonably priced, tasty, and very large. Sara had a shrimp pita which shared the same three characteristics. Beer was on tap, but we stuck to the Coke and Fanta this time.

An inexpensive option for dinner, especially if you like to eat early, is to go to a Café. This particular one, Café Natur, has a pleasant interior, decent food, and very good Faroese beer on tap.
When you enter, pick any seat you like (the upper section is non-smoking through around 9PM). To order, walk up to the bar and tell the bar tender what you want. Pick up your drinks and wait for your food to be delivered to you. To pay, walk up to the bar and tell them what you ordered. Tipping is generally not expected, but feel free to put any small coins you get as change into the large Akvavit glass at the bar.
Favorite Dish: I liked the "Natur Burger," which isn't actually a hamburger but a chicken sandwich served on a hamburger bun. Sara really liked their "Nachos," but be aware they are made with Mozzarella cheese. Their pitas and tortillas are also interesting and tasty, even if purists might not be exactly thrilled.
As for beer, the Café has a full complement of brews made by Föroya Bjór. I especially liked the Black Sheep Ale, as well as the Green Island Stout. A pint costs Kr 55-65, depending on what you get. A bit pricey, but since I was coming from Iceland, I was downright giddy at how cheap it was! 8)

We decided to splash out and try the luxury restaurant on our final night in Tórshavn. The atmosphere is wonderful, with tremendous picture windows overlooking Tórshavn and the harbor. The service was excellent, and the food was well-prepared and of excellent quality. My one peeve: our guidebook said this place specialized in Puffin, but it was not on the menu when we visited. Oh well.
Favorite Dish: I had the grilled monkfish, which was fresh, artfully prepared, and tasty.
