  • The weather in the Faroe Islands is extremely changeable and should be taken into account when making your travel plans. An extensive tunnel building programme has been ongoing in the Faroes for 30 years or more but some islands can only be reached by ferry. Unfavourable sea conditions can cause delayed or cancelled sailings. The Faroes International Airport on Vįgar can be prone to fog which again can cause delays and candellations to flights. Our return flight was repeatedly delayed and then cancelled due to Vįgar Airport being fog bound. I ended up spending two extra days in the Faroe Islands because of the weather! Be prepared, if you are the sort of person who lives by tight schedules you may find the Faroese weather most frustrating, just do as the locals do .. accept it!

Great weather is not an everyday occurence in the Faroes, so when it happens, jump up and enjoy it! My fiance and I had really hoped to do the Vestmanna bird cliff tour among other things, but didn't go when the weather happened to be great one day. I wasn't worried about it, because I like soggy weather. However, bad weather can make for rough waves, and the following week we tried two or three times to go, but it was cancelled. Don't make our mistake!

    ATMs after midnight

  • Not a grave warning, but didn't see where else to really post...

The ATMs in the Faroes don't operate between 12pm and 6am. I suspect this is to protect you from yourself, and buying too much to drink at the bar. It's not like there is any rampant problem with muggings. The good news is that some bars now appear to have debit card readers, though I wouldn't count on this for every place.

    62-North marketing: A Tourist Trap?
  • Tip Rating:

  • Apparently, National Geographic Magazine made a visit here recently and wrote an article entitled "62 Degrees North." In some sort of tourist tie-in, a host of "62-North" themed activities and establishments have sprung up across the Faroes.

I view marketing campaigns like this as something of a "warning flag" for tourist traps. I have not placed this tip in the "Tourist Traps" category because I have no information on anything wrong going on. Therefore, I will just issue this "warning" to be on the lookout.

While I do not blame the enterprising Faroese for working hard to draw in additional tourist Krónur with a new marketing campaign, there is always the tempation to take advantage of new tourists by significantly raising prices. As a result, prospective travelers should keep an eye out for significantly increased prices, especially in places actively using the "62-North" theme.

    Tunnels !!!

  • The Faroe Islands have a lot of tunnels. The most recent ones have two lanes. Most older tunnels only have one lane, one no light. Make sure who gets to go first before you enter the tunnel. If you have to give way you can park your car in special places, but do not go in there too early as you can cause a line up of cars. Also always give way to buses and trucks as they cannot go on the special designed spaces for the cars.

    Paranoid black-back gull - Višareiši

  • A friend who is fitter than I am was walking on his own above Višareiši and had to undergo a prolonged attack from a greater black-back. it seems most unlikely that its nest was anywhere near and it seems to have been a nutter.

My friend is no wimp but he admitted he was shaking at the end of the attack - they're mighty big birds.

  • If you come here and plan to trekk and you are family with kids. Dont do it. The nature here is wild and barren. You will only get problems. I suggest you to choose another destination and come back to this place. I dont mean it is not beautiful. I like this destination.
