Åland is a part of Finland, but here on the island between Sweden and Finland all the inhabitants speak Swedish as a motherlanguage. It has belonged to Sweden before, and that is one reason they speak Swedish.

Mariehamn's midsummer pole

Midsummer is a major event in Scandinavia, and in Aland they decorate midsummer poles and have a big party. Every settlement has it's own pole. I arrived long after midsummer and missed seeing the poles in full regalia.
