Washing carpets at the beach, Helsinki
When you tell people that the Finns still wash their carpets by hand, many do not believe this to be true.
However, the tradition continues and in several water front places around the city, the evidence is apparent.
Long live the old traditions!
The Finns watch their carpets in the sea ... I think it's just during the summer weekend. If you want to see that in Helsinki, go in the south of the city near the Kaivopuisto Brunnsparken (a big garden in the south of Helsinki)
Well, for me to spend a sunny day at the beach merely means to relax, have ice-cream or water melon, wipe the sand from my legs and read a book.
For Finns beachlife is something completely different. Must be some kind of a national hobby to take the rugs to the beach and wash them with the water from the sea on those wooden decks which are especially constructed for this purpose. -Very strange.
Every Finnish house I ever visited was always scrupulously clean. In winter I had to place all my employer's rugs in the snow, let them harden a little, then beat them with a carpet beater. In summer women don their bikinis head to the beach and give their carpets a wash.
