Hey when you come in here you should definitely reserve at least half a day for a walk aroun the woods. And you won't even have to go that far, look at the picture, that's where I walk every day from home to the office:)

As you all probably know, Finland didn't contribute to world's vocabulary just with the word NOKIA, but also sauna. It has been explained to me once that for Finns sauna used to be the only place where they actually could clean themselves during the winter (my contra was that it is the only place where anyone in Finland during the winter can get warm, but it is not based on a scientifical research). And as it is quite a remarkable experience, you shouldn't miss the process of getting naked - getting hot - getting into sea for a swim - getting hot - getting into sea for a swim - getting hot - etc. and most of all if you want to be a real Finn, then you have to
GET DRUNK :) On the picture you can see a friend of mine getting into sea for a swim;) close to Porvo, where we spent amazing weekend with the Czech and Slovakian guys living in Finland (imagine: about 40 people having sauna, party and fun very far from the civilization - it was GREAT).

Best times to visit Helsinki is Vappu (May Day) and Juhannus (Midsummer's Day). Those are the days when people flock the streets to party, drink and fight.
On Vappu, you'll notice people wearing sailor's caps. This is not a sign of owning a yacht, rather it's a proof of graduating from lukio, secondary high school.

A beautiful island called Pihlajasaari. It is situated just outside Helsinki coastline, approximately 10 min. ferrytrip (cheap) from Kaivopuisto or Ruoholahti.
Perfect spot for picnics or sunbathing. There are a couple of grill spots on the island where you can prepare your own meals (wood is provided free of charge).
Walk around and enjoy the beautiful island.
Sandy beaches and cliffs, restaurant and even a separate sunbathing area for nudists.

I think usual 'sightseeings' are quite boring. You should go driving and see the finnish nature: forests and lakes. I specially recommend the north of Finland:Lappland. It is just lovely...it is the 'real' Finland.

There is a wonderful large Rhododendron garden in the outskits of Helsinki in Haaga. It is outdoors so it visitable only in the summer: July, August.
Transportation by local M-train, 10 minutes from the main railway station.

If you have more time, go outside Helsinki and visit the countryside. For example, same 140 km north you'll find wild nature with hiking paths, lakes to swim in, the tallest rock climbing area in Northern Europe, etc. If you feel like just sitting back and relaxing, take the boat ride around the nature reserve.

If you are in Finland at the end of June, you'll notice that for one weekend towns become deserted. It's Midsummer's Festival, 'Juhannus', which means that everybody goes to summer cottages (either their own or friend's) to celebrate midsummer. By the lake or in the countyside they lit up bonfires, 'juhannuskokko', in the a middle of the night. It's a celebration of endless day (it doesn's get dark at all).

Take a side trip by car (or even boat) to Porvoo, about 50 km east of Helsinki. Porvoo features old wooden houses and cobblestone streets loaded with cafes and shops. A visit to the Brunberg Chocolate Factory outlet is a must!!!

Local dive stores arrange trips to the "Kronprins Gustav Adolf" underwater wreck park. The wreck sunk in 1788, and lies now on the bottom at a depth of 18 - 20 metres. The finnish National Board of Antiquities eqipped the wreck with information signs and a guideline in 2000, and the wreck has since attracted many avid divers.

19/1 Just returned from Helsinki

We only had 4 hours in Helsinki. Good enough for lunch, some shopping and a long walk. Dark falls early and in that twilight, this church on Senate square becomes a fairy tale.
