Restaurant Salve is one of the oldest sailor pubs in Helsinki. The menu offers many traditional Finnish dishes, especially fish dishes at moderate prices. The wooden interior is decorated with all sorts of sailor memorabilia. The restaurant even has a small outdoor terrace with great views of the shipyards. I was here with a VT friend for lunch. We opted for the delicious fried herring with mashed potatoes and drank a couple of Finnish beers. Pyttipannu (Sausage Potato Hash) by HORSCHECK Juttutupa is a traditional Finnish restaurant which consists of a large wooden outdoor terrace and a big indoor area. The building was established in 1908. From the outdoor terrace you can enjoy lovely views of Helsinki's Central Park. You get both local specialities and international dishes here. I visited Juttupa with two VT friends and they recommended me that I should give the Finnish Pyttipannu a try. Pyttipannu is a sausage potato hash with various side dishes like cucumber and a fried egg. Prices are relatively moderate. Juttutupa is mainly frequented by an alternative crowd. Courtesy of the website by starship This exquisitely decorated restaurant is one of the newer "Palace" restaurants opened within the past year (summer, 2005). It is a veritiable feast for the eyes. Clean modern lines but warm & inviting in one of their many seating area, it's a fabulous place. While it may have touches of a nautical type theme, it certainly not the usual overdone decorating that often is associated with that theme. But don't go there for the views alone. Start by having a little before-dinner drink at their bar, then try one of their fresh fish or excellent seafood dishes which come at a "moderate price." (Moderate may still be somewhat expensive in this part of the world.) Appetizers will run about 9 to 20 Euros, while main courses will be in the neighborhood of 15 to 26 Euros. The Perch, Flounder, Whitefish and Monkfish dishes sound a little nouvelle cuisine to me but look delicious. Russian restaurant Romanov by sim1 In the late afternoon I went to a Russian restaurant called 'Romanov'. It is one of the Russian restaurants in Helsinki, but I choose this one because it seemed very nice and centrally llocated (it is quite close to Stockmann's, the big department store). The food was great, lots of it, and full of taste. I had the 'Marinated beef fillet shashlik Basturma' which costed me 20,50 euro. The wines were terribly expensive here though, I am not sure if they were normal prices for Helsinki, or it was just this restaurant. The menu list is in Finnish, but they have part of the menu list in Swedish as well if you ask for it. The waitress was very friendly and tried to translate it all in English as well, hahaha, but I have to admit that this made it all even more confusing than it already was. All in all it was a very nice restaurant to go to. The food was great, the restaurant was really nice, and made this day in Helsinki to a perfect end. Romanov is open: Monday to Friday 11 - 24 Saturday 12 - 24 Sunday - closed Luncheon 11 - 15:30 On their website you can find much more info, see the menu list, etc, etc.: Romanov's Restaurant Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Yrjönkatu 15Phone: +358 9 642 394Directions: just two minutes walk from Stockmann'sWebsite: www.romanov.fi Other Contact: romanov@romanov.fi

Not so crowded on the terrace today by Igraine This restaurant at the far end of Esplanaden is a typical seen and must be seen place. The interior is very stylish and trendy. Outside they have a terrace where it can be very crowded with good weather. Not today though. But the food i got was good. We had a salad. They have prepared a bowl with the basic greens and you yourself can decide what toppings you want to have, ie salmon, tunna, sundried tomatoes, fried spicy chicken, parmazan. And finish it off with a dash of olive oil or other dressing.
Only been there once and the salad was pretty good but no favorite dish as far. They also have an a la carte restaurant part.

Cappucino and a kanelbulle at Robert's Coffee by sim1 Doing some research on VT does pay off at times! I got this great tip from the Helsinki page of Gili_S to go Robert's Coffee. And he is right, they have some great coffee here! There are several locations where you can enjoy their coffee, from cappuccino to espresso, whatever you prefer. The coffee tasted really good, a place where I definitely go back to when I see this chain again. Apparently they are also in Stockholm, so I have to give that a try as well! :-) They had some little things to eat here also, and it looked so good that I gave it a try. I had a kanelbulle (cinnamon bun) which was huge and tasted sooo good, mmmmmmm, delicious! Hahaha, I am getting hungry again when thinking about it :-)) Leave a Comment Theme: Coffeehouse

Erottaja bar, Helsinki, Finland by sinoda Easy-going joint with chrom style interior in an L-shaped location in the basement. Young and urban clientel hanging out for a beer or two or for the whole evening. On weekend nights crowded so it should be no problem to get to know some locals... =) sometimes there's even a dj putting on some records... loose atmosphere>! With the high prices in Helsinki, one way to save some money is to eat at one of the fast food kebab places. I had a kebab plate at a chain called Chilli located inside the Central Rail Station. For a reasonable price, I received a plate full of kebab meat from a large skewer, fries, salads, hummus, sauces, and a piece of pita bread. I'm not sure of the exact ingredients -- but it was all good! Unlike most fast food restaurants in the USA, Chilli also serves beer.

by Gili_S Cafe Torpanranta located in the west of Helsinki by the sea. The best of this place is its peaceful location where in the summer you can also sit outside just by the sea enjoying warm afternoon summer sun. zetor restaurant is owned by a member of the finnish band "lenningrad cowboys" and is a rather odd but very nice place to spend an evening. the restaurant is dominated by old soviet zetor tractors that are all over the place between the tables where you are eating. one of the many odd things about the place is that the menu is posted on tetrapak cartons. i thought that was a cool way to present the food.
