The olympic stadium
Helsinki had the Olympic Summer Games in 1952, and although it’s a really long time ago, the main stadium is still in use. Both for athletics and football. It’s also possible to get guided tours, and to go up in the tall tower, which I unfortunately never did… The view must be amazing.
Well, okey then… It cost six euro or something like that, so I decided to not go up there… :)
The Olympic Stadium
This is the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. The Olympics were here in 1952 and since then this is the biggest and the main stadium in Finland. The national team play here usually and in the summer there are also rock concerts here and other festivals.
The Stadion Tower of Helsinki Olympic Stadium
Helsinki olympic Stadium was built in 1938 and in 1952 the Olympic games were hold there. Helsinki Olympic Stadium has been characterized as the world’s most beautiful Olympic Stadium. It is located very central in the city of Helsinki, so if you are there, take a tram or a bus (or walk) and go and have a look at it, it's definitely worth it!
The capacity of Helsinki Olympic Stadium is about 40 000 people (more in concerts). The plans to renovate the whole stadium thoroughly have progressed and a big renovation will start within the next few years. I look forward to see the result, but it also means that the stadium will be closed for a pretty long time. However, you can always give it a try, if the stadium is closed when you're visiting it, don't be sad. There is a lot more to see in the city.
When we are talking about the Stadium I also have to mention the Stadium Tower. it is a tower that stands next to the rest of the Olympic Stadium. It is 72 meters high and you can go up in it if you just buy a ticket. (5€ for adults, 2€ for children, and children under 6 are free) I visited the tower once, sadly was it a rainy day but although it was awesome. You can see the whole downtown of Helsinki! It is definitely worth to see! The pictures above is from my visit at the stadium, and from a light festival in Helsinki.
The Olympic Stadium also offers a very cheap hostel, so you can even sleep there! And a restaurant aswell (MON-FRI, 9am-4pm).
Days when the Olympic Stadium is closed for visitors are the following:
19th June 4pm-9pm

Helsinki's Olympic Stadium was inaugurated in summer 1938. The idea to host the 1940 Olympics had been cancelled due to WWII. Later the 1952 Summer Olympics took place in the stadium. At that time the stadium could accomodate up to 17.000 spectators, whereas nowadays its capacity is 40.000. A 72 m tall viewing tower is attached to the stadium.

At the Olympic stadium you will find the Sports Museum of Finland, telling you the story of great Finnish sporting events and whilst you might not think of Finland as a great sports nation, there are great successes such as the ice hockey team, the national runner hero Paavo Nurmi (as statue outside the stadium too) and of course Mika Häkinen, Matti Nykänen and others. In fact, Nykänen's medal collection can be seen amongst the treasures on display. You can also climb the tower for good city views.

For some of the best overhead views of Helsinki, go to the Olympic Stadium tower. It is 72 m high and gives you a good glimpse of the surrounding olympic buildings from the 1952 Games, the nearby botanical gardens and the many towers and spires that still dominate the city's landscape due to the (welcome) absence of high-rise buildings.
In front of the Olympic Stadium you will also find the statue of Paavo Nurmi, the original "Flying Finn" who dominated men's athletics in the 1920s. His most amazing feat, perhaps, came when he won the gold medal at the 1924 Olympics in both the 1500 m and 5000 m races, despite the fact they were run only 40 minutes apart.

If you are in Helsinki during World Championships in Athletics (6-14 August 2005), area around Olympic Stadium is quite full. There would be a great atmosphere around the whole city because of the event.
There have been reparations and the Stadium has been closed in the entire summer of 2004.
Tram lines 4 and 10 operate between the city centre and the Olympic Stadium.
Observation Tower / Olympic Grounds
Visit this place for stunning view over Helsinki. The elevator takes you up to a height of 72 metres metres. Up there, space is very limited. There are two floors connected by a set of stairs with old pictures from Helsinki Olympics in 1952. On both of the upper floors, the view is obstructed at one side. That means, that a full 360° view is possible, but not on a single floor. As of 2010, entry fee was 5 EUR, concessions made to students and senior citizens.
Outside the Stadium
The Olympic Stadium and Tower are well worth visiting. However i thought i would add an image of the original flying Finn, Parvo Nurmi. Not only did he win gold for Finland, he was also the last man to carry the olympic torch into the stadium for the 1952 Helsinki Olympiad!
This is where Helsinki hosted the summer olympics back in 1952. The arena has been described as the most beautiful in the world. The tower which can be seen in the pic is 72 m high and the stadium covers 4.9 hectares.
The stadium built for the Olympic Games in 1952 is at the moment being upgraded, but the museum of sport is open so is the 72 metreshigh tower, great views of Helsinki. Tower admission 2 euro for adult, child 1 euro. for the lift. Tram number 4 0r 10 takes you to the Olympic Stadium.
ITs an olmypic stadium u KNOW!!
Recently i visited the Olympic stadium and tower in Munich and i loved it, so when i got to Helsinki one of the 1st things i had to see was the Olympic stadium.
To be honest when i got close to the stadium i wasn’t really impressed as it does look very much like a 53yr old stadium but that didnt put off as it still looked pretty cool when i got closer ,once i got to the stadium the 1st thing i did was go to the top of the Olympic tower.
Now If there is one way to see the stadium and Helsinki this is very much it as you get a very good view of Helsinki and all ofl its landmarks.
i would say this is something you have to see just for that amazing view.
After the coming down from the tower we didnt really see any of the stadium as im not sure if you could or not and maybe i wasn’t really interested but well well worth going just for the view from the tower!!!.

Climb the Olympic tower to get a gorgeous view of Helsinki and the Gulf of Finland. The tower-top is actually quite narrow, I dont think you could fit in more than 10-12 ppl in there.
It is free of charge with Helsinki card.
