Suomenlinna Island & Fortress, Helsinki
Suomenlinna island fortress, Helsinki
The island is full of history!! It is very beautiful place to visit at summertime. There's museums, restaurants, cafès, guided tours. And, what's amazing, there's also settlement on the island. The ferrys go between the market place and Suomenlinna all around the year.
Visit SUOMENLINNA, the fortress island in the archipelago of Helsinki.
The boat trip from the Market Square to the island is - especially in summer - an experience in itself, and on the island you will find a peaceful and quiet atmosphere, a museum in the old fortress and a really good restaurant (in a building which I think must have been a prison once!) where you can join one of the typically Scandinavian buffets.
Suomenlinna is an island, is beautiful, is worth a visit! A WW2 submarine, harbours, cruisers, a casern, a church, couple of museams and old defences.
In Finland, there are two official languages - Finnish and Swedish. Also Suomenlinna has a Swedish name Sveaborg. I find funny that Suomenlinna means 'The Finnish Castle', whereas Sveaborg is 'The Swedish Castle'
Any season, go there and enjoy yourself.
sharp sun and fresh wind will make it after the long wintersummer
picnic (do I need to say more?)autumn
never heard of the colorful autumn in Finland? shame on you;)winter
the wind will make you feel as if the temperature is 20 degrees lower than it actually is, but ice-waves are worth it
Great place to spend a sunny day and have a picnic.
Ferry to Suomenlinna leaves from harbour of market square.
pictured is a view of helsinki harbour from suomenlinna. suomenlinna is an interesting island to explore on foot. take the ferry from kauppatori, (market square) in central helsinki.
I couldn't resist to post one more picture... the landscape there was so breathtaking !!
I really loved it.
Just imagine yourself walking next to this beautiful shore... almost magical :-)
The summer brings many visitors to the five island which make up the area known as Suomenlinna.
There are museums, shops, cafes, homes and a church.
Just a nice corner in S., taken during an isle trip around. In some places you can sit & relax almost alone (at least off-season). This "door" is letting you in the fortress area.
This Fortress on the border between East and West.
construction to Fortress began in 1748.
Suomenlinna is on the UNESCO list of
World Heritage Sites.
Spend a day in Suomenlinna Island
A very beatiful island in Helsinki. It has a old fortress, and other nice locations. Take a look at some of my pictures to see what I am talking about ...
When visiting Helsinki, you should take some time to visit Suomenlinna, the old maritime fortress founded 1748. It was built on islands and is a world heritage.
The island is nice to go to but personally I was somewhat disappointed - take a lunch and have a picnic and you'll enjoy - the boat ride over was just as enjoyable as the island.
Very nice green island to have a walk or a picnic in the summer. See some old big guns inside the seafortress. Great view to the city direction because it's just 15 min. away from mainland.
It's beautiful there! It was one of the last warm summer days when we were there, and I wish we would've had a big basket full of good food to have a picnic. And not so much clothes!! LOL!
