Kouvola Things to Do

  • Tykkimäki amusement park

I've worked there for the last two summers! In the photo is the Kouvola carousel.Well, it's a theme park! They are always fun... aren't they? :) It's one of the largest ones in Finland.

  • Steam locomotive

This locomotive is a monument to the old times. It can be seen outside the railway station. If you stand in front of the railway station facing it, then it is to your right.

  • Tykkimäki amusement park

This was the ride where I usually worked - the Enterprise!! When it was more quiet I sometimes hopped in myself (there are usually two people working on this ride)! :)

Kouvola Restaurants

  • Meeting point

This is my favourite cafe in Kouvola, mostly because of the central location and relaxed ambience. It's a chain cafe, so you can find Coffeehouse in Helsinki, Tampere, Lappeenranta and many other towns as well. The prices are a bit high, which is why I usually only take a cup of tea or coffee... They have cakes, which look delicious, as well as...

  • Restaurant Fransmanni

Fransmanni is the restaurant in Sokos Hotel Vaakuna in Kouvola. Been there many times and their food never disappoints me. It's a good place for a night out with a bunch of friends, but also offers a nice ambience for a dinner for just the two of you. Chicken pasta with creamy tomato and herb sauce, marinated tomatos and olives. My favourite...

  • Fast Food

Hesburger is a popular fast food chain in Finland. The food is basically the same as at McDonald's: hamburgers, fries, salads and soft drinks. The interior is colourful, the ambience a bit noisy especially upstairs where there is a playing area for children. Great for a quick lunch or picking up a take-away meal. Chicken burger with fries

  • Tasty Tex-Mex

Amarillo serves tasty tex-mex food such as tortillas, quesadillas and nachos. There are also burgers, steaks and pasta on the menu. Nice, relaxed ambience and good service. After you're finished your meal you can enjoy a few drinks or even stay there all night, since there's also a night club on the premises. Chicken pocket (Chicken fillet,...

  • Nice little café at railway station

Small cafe in front of the railway station in Kouvola. A good place to sit and wait for your bus/train or just enjoy a cup of cappuccino while reading newspapers or watching people outside. They serve all sorts of coffee, sandwiches and sweet pastries and also beer and other alcoholic drinks. Nice service and reasonable prices.

  • Central European style

Nice addition to the coffee-scene in Kouvola. This place has sertain old time charm and it resembles traditional European cafés. They have a good selection of coffees and alcoholic cocktails and also homebaked pies and cakes.

  • Tex-mex

This restaurant/bar serves nice tex-mex food in big portions and they also have very wide selections of beer and cider. Don't expect much from the service and it can get a bit noisy if there are a lot of people at the bar drinking, but the food is good so it's definitely a good option if you're feeling hungry.

  • Chinese food

This small restaurant offers good Chinese food, especially their lunch buffet for about 7-7,5 € is really good value and their tea is absolutely lovely. The owners don't speak or understand much Finnish, but they are welcoming and smiling. They also provide take away if you ask. Decoration is not as nice as in other ethnic places in Kouvola, but...

  • Pita kebab to die for!

I didn't like kebab, before I tried their Pita Kebab. It's absolutely delicious so go there and try for yourself if you're craving some fast food. Quite obvious isn't it. Pita Kebab of course, but they do make good pizzas too.

  • Thai-food in Kouvola

A very good Thai-restaurant with reasonable prices. The atmosphere is really nice too since they have decorated the place beautifully. Its like a little piece of Thailand in the middle of Kouvola. They've also got a small shop there selling silk, spices and chopsticks. All I've tasted has been good.

  • the best steaks

A great Spanish-style restaurant with the best food I've eaten. The most pleasant decor ("like a real Spanish restaurant") in Kouvola. Quality of the food never lets you down. Pork Catalonia. A large breaded fillet of pork served with a peach cream sauce, french fries and vegetables. If you don't have a sweeth-toothe like I do, it may not be for...

  • Aseman Vintti

You would think the upstairs of a train station would not be a very good place for a restaurant, but this place has been a very popular place in Kouvola for years. I think the restaurant changed owner just recently and I don't know if the place is any different now, but the atmosphere is very nice and everything I've eaten there has been...

  • Excellent Thai restaurant

A lovely Thai restaurant with a very nice staff and beautiful surroundings. They also have a little Thai shop within the restaurant, I think they sell some spices and food ingredients there? They are co-operating with a local travel agency and arrange "food trips" to Thailand every now and then.Another one I should try out very soon, I've only...

  • Genuine Italian food

Fresh pasta, pizza, sallads...I must say I haven't tried this one yet, but I am about to as I have heard so much good about the place! It's also next to my hair-dresser's so maybe I'll stop by there next time I get a new haircut. :)

  • Restaurant Rosso

I keep trying different things from the menu and I really can't tell what is my favourite dish. Last time when I was there I had Rosso Duo which included a small sirloin steak, a grilled fillet of pork, french fries, grilled tomato and béarnaise sauce. Mmm... I loved it!

Kouvola Nightlife

  • Irish Pub Old Tom

It's not a very big one but it's a great place! Used to be my other 'living room' before "Rytmi-Katti" opened in Kouvola and I still go here every once in a while. :) Excellent selection of different beers & ciders, also some tasty food if you get hungry during a long evening in the pub! :) They play occasionally live music there.

  • Bar Illusion

Perhaps the most popular place to start the night at, it's very crowded there until about midnight when the majority of people make their way to other places. The prices are alright and the atmosphere is nice!Illusion is a nice place to go even during the week (or in the middle of the day), just to have a cup of coffee and catch up with friends.

  • The bar of Hotel Vaakuna

A very nice night club, I think it's the most popular one in Kouvola (not the cheapest one though). On most Fridays there is a band playing. There are two parts in the club - in the bigger one they play the latest ones dance hits and in the smaller part you can dance to Finnish pop music and the best classics from 70-80's.I think the entrance fee...

Kouvola Transportation

  • By train

The trains between St. Petersburg and Helsinki stop here. Coming from StP you can only get off. This is a crossroad if you want to go into the area near the Russian border. There are also frequent train connections to Helsinki. There are various buses from here. You can travel all the way to Helsinki which takes longer than by train or to Imatra...

  • Take the train!

Kouvola has one of Finland's biggest "crossroad" train stations, so possibly the easiest way to get there is to travel by train. For example, it takes two hours to travel to Kouvola from Helsinki and a one-way ticket for adults costs around 20 euros, depending on the train.

  • Pesäpallo

The pesäpallo (the American version of the game is called baseball :-))... except that pesäpallo is very far from it and, in my opinion, much more fascinating) season began in May and will go on until September. The team of Kouvola, KPL (Kouvolan Pallonlyöjät) is playing in the top league this year, can't wait to see how it goes for them. :) I go...
