Ponte dei Sospiri - Huokausten silta

by akkipaa Updated Jan 21, 2015

We are now not in Venice or any other canal town, but we have our own "Ponte dei Sospiri" here. I wrote this to OffTheBeaten because the bridge is in the centre bbut it's easy to pass without any notice, at least the history.

Story numer one (the happy one). Lappeenranta is an old military town and on those old days there were a lot of soldiers here. When they were on holidays or spend their free time on the evenings (only some 3 to 6 hours) in the town, this bridge was on their route and the final edge to say goodbye to girl friends.

Story numnber two (the sad one). You know, Finland partisipated the II World War in three quite own Wars and we say that we "defenced our freedom and independence but lost with keeping em". We were sentenced very huge war compensations (known as war reparations also) and the compensations were imported by train. The compensations were about 5% of our GDP during eight years. It's said that the people of Lappeenranta followed with sighs these trains.

Walking around in the city and particular in the fortress area there are many old wooden houses, which are interesting to see. Some houses turn to museum but in some, families are still living in
