Old Cock: Fun on three floors

by akkipaa Written Dec 27, 2014

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Old Cock is a combination of three floors with 6 different departments. There is English pub in street level, Cock's Cave is located in the middle with live music events and stand up comic. Rock and dance (and sauna department also) are on the bottom.

Take at least a Guinness or some English ale if you pass the restaurant.

Tolppa grill (grill in pillar): Food'n stand :)

by akkipaa Written Dec 27, 2014

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Okey, this is not basically a restaurant but very good place to get some food, fast and easy. Kust walk Valtakatu on the left side to east and you can't miss it. "Atomi" and "Vety" are the local spacialities (meat pie with or without egg) and other more normal stuff like hamburgers are on the list also.

Favorite Dish: If you already have eaten Vety or Atomi, take "Lihis with HK:n sininen :). It's a meat pie with the most known sausage in Finland called HK's Blue. HK is the brand ("Helsingin kauppiaat", Merchandice of Helsinki) and the Blue means that it is sold in plastic bag with blue text. The list of content tells everything: Natrium glutamat, beef, pork, ginger, coriander, black pepper, paprika, white pepper and there is 230 kcal energy and 18% flesh and 6,5% carbon, 9% protein and 2,2% salt.

Tassos: (Closed) - One era has ended

by akkipaa Written Dec 27, 2014

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Tassos is basically a Greek style restaurant with a Finnish flavor and it operated from 1979 to 2014. It is known from pepper steak and unfortunately the story is now history, times fly, restaurant sew it's last day on 23th December 2014. We all who have tasted the famous pepper steak just have to wait till Spring 2015 to see if the coming restaurant will have the same flavour and taste in the menu.

Rosso: One of the oldeast Italian chain restaurant

by akkipaa Written Nov 23, 2014

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Rosso is an old chain restaurant of S-Group and you can find members of the chain from almost every (bigger) towns in Finland. If you visit one, you can think you have visited all, but there's always a local flavor, at least it's coming from the personnel. Rosso is easy to visit the atmosphere is straight forwarding and the locations are central, like in Lappeenranta also, it's in the middle downtown. I appreciate always good service, you know, it can vary day by day, but here I have not faced any bigger problems with it.

Pizzas, pastas and some Finnish also in the many and one of the specialties is Pizzas baked of rye flour. You know is Finns, we eat a lot of rye bread and if I remember correctly, rye bread is number one what Finns are missing when abroad (some take it to travel package also).

    Opening times
    mon-tue 11:00-23:00
    fri-sat 11:00-24:00
    sun 11:00-22:30

PS. One of the reasons I visit Rosso often is that I used to belong to Rosso's Customer Board having a role of business developer :) and coach of the restaurant manager.

Favorite Dish: This time we took "Pizza Tandori" and "Alla Rosso" with garlic, both baked with traditional wheat flour. Salad table is included to price which vary around 12-13 euros (Classic) and 15-16 (Specials, like Barbabietola, Russian, Kebab and Chorizo).

During weekends and on the evening the salad table is replaced with more tasty anti pasto table.

Dark M is a very unique coffeeshop in the center of Lappeenranta. When you step in, your first thought might be that this a place only for the listeners of heavy metal, but if you stay for for a while, you can see that Dark M is a place for everybody. It is place where you relax, and listen experimental music. There are different kind of art, made by many artists in Finland. Small statues, swords, paintings etc. There are also few computers, and internet is free to all the customers.
The owners of Dark M have also purchases
some board games, so that you can play Chess and few other games with you friends, or with other customers of the coffeeshop

Also, everything is in sale. All furnitures, computers, art, carpets, lamps, plants, books, bookshelfs. Everything. If you want to buy something, just ask.

Favorite Dish: Filled bread stick is my favourite from the menue. And I also like chocolad milkshake.

    Café Majurska: Need a break?

by Knutt Updated Feb 12, 2004

This very cosy place is situated in the historical fortress of Lappeenranta.
The house itself was built in the middle of the 19th century and used to be the home of Russian officers before Finland got its independence, later it was a hospital and then an umbrella factory moved in.

Favorite Dish: Too bad it was closed when I passed on New Year, I would have liked to try some homemade cake there.
    Well, maybe next time.

This is classic coffee house in the fortress. Serving Finnish coffee and the traditional pastry items. I was here in the winter, but I am really tempted to visit again in the summer and see how beautiful it is here when sitting outside and watching the sunset.

  • Cafe Majurska: A wonderful cafe

by sabsi Updated Jul 11, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It's rather a cafe than a restaurant but it's absolutely amazing: The Cafe Majurska at the fortress of Lappeenranta. The house the cafe is in used to be a home for Russian officers (before the independence of Finland) and it was also a hospital for epidemic diseases and an umbrella factory once.

It feels like being in a museum, with all the old furniture and pictures. And I can assure you, it didn't smell of epidemic diseases anymore!

Favorite Dish: The apple pie with custard was lovely. And the tea was the most delicious tea I ever had in my life.
