    Lappeenranta via Air

by akkipaa Updated Nov 25, 2014

Unfortunately the times have changed and it's almost impossible to find information in the situation "that there are no scheduled fligths" from some place. Lappeenranta is on of these. Lappeenranta is one of these places, but you can try to google "Lappeenranta - Helsinki" and you get tens of proposal like "Cheap flights", "Travellink" and "Ryanair".

Ok, currently Ryanair flights to Milan (Bergamo) and Düsseldorf (Weeze), both twice a week, but no inland (connection) flights available. So, it might be impossible to you to reach Lappeenranta by air, but we can still reach some central European location, but, you know, Ryanair re plans the route map every now and then.

It's a pity, the airport is one of the closest in the world, I can walk there in 15 minutes from home, is almost in the middle of the city!

Coming in 2015: less flights! Ryanair's Germany flights will be discontinued after winter season and Barcelona will be on schedule during (only) July. Italy still twice a week. Still we are working to find new operators, but the economical situation is quite challenging here and there.

    Lappeenranta via Road

by akkipaa Updated Nov 24, 2014

Driving is the best option to reach Lappeenranta if you are coming from East or West. There are no (currently) scheduled domestic flights and railways is best in south and nordbound directions.

Main roads are 6 (from Helsinki, Kouvola and to Joensuu and Lapland), 12 (from Rauma, Tampere, Lahti, Kouvola) and 13 (Kokkola, Jyväskylä, Mikkeli and to Vyborg), 14 (from Juva, Savonlinna, Parikkala).

There are only short legs of highway (Helsinki-Porvoo and Imatra-Lappeenranta-Route 13 crossing), but the routes are in good shape and speed limits are from 80 to 100. If you have strong right leg be warned that there are a lot of speed cameras in 6,12 and 13, so take a navigator with speed camera alarms.

Gas stations are mostly chains like ABC, Teboil, Shell and you can upload an apps to your phone from stores at least from ABC (ABC Mobiili, I have Lumia, so I use Nokia store and don't know what is available in Apple store).

As you can check from the picture, some times the weather is also good when driving.

Some distances to Lappeenranta in kilometers:
    Helsinki 223
    Tampere 275
    Joensuu 234
    Lahti 150
    Mikkeli 108
    Oulu 555
    Rovaniemi 775
    Nuorgam 1267
    Kilpisjärvi 1142

Lappeenranta as a cheap transit point to Russia

by Falconson Updated Nov 17, 2011

    Hello Everybody!

Now i would like to discuss Lappeenranta, e, specially its airport as a transit point to get St petersburg from Europe.

As for me i guessed how can i get Russia very cheap as the monopoly of airports and airlines cant allow to get this country cheaper than 100-150 euros for one way. After some time i checked ther rout map of Ryanair, the largest European low cost airline, and got its new city - Lappeenranta.

As you know, its located in 230 kms to St petersburg, about 3-4 hours by bus. As i live in Barcelona i have bought a ticket to Brussels (Charleroi), waited 3 hours and then had a flight to Lappeenranta. It was the cheapest way for me to get St Petersburg. As i analized the rout map of Ryanair, there are 3 flights from Brussels, Milan and Dusseldorf.

Before the flight i made reservation for the trip to St Petersburg to one of private russian bus companies. Thats way was the most suitable. I found some train but it doesnt have a direct way. At first you need to use local bus to Vainikkala railway station and then a train to St Petersburg. The price wasnt competetive. Privat Russian bus costs about 20-25 euros for one way and make delivery right to the address in St Petersburg. You may find icompanies in google search.

The road was about 4 hours, i had to come through 2 customs. Actually i spend half of the road for the Customs, but its also interesting experience)

    Enjoy your travelling,

As I live in Finland, obvious for me was just to drive there, from Helsinki the motorway is only till about Porvoo and from there it is normal roads. It was winter and snowing but the roads are OK and I made it in few hours drive. There are many stopover stations on the way, most at gas stations but some are different and unique, like this Antik Anna Cafe not far from Kouvula.

Lappeenranta is about 250 km from Helsinki, you can drive there and you can take a train. The view on the way to Lappeenranta is not very special, the best starts actually after you get there so you can also fly in domestic flight and get there much quicker.
