This is relatively small city with small centre of older city and lots of space of green gardens and fields. Great place to live in for environmentalist if you don’t mind the nuclear power station near by ;-)

Porvoo (Borgå in swedish) means Castle River.
The Castle Hill
is located at the northern side of the town.
Climb there even if there´s nothing to see on the hill, no castle, no ruins, juste some left-overs from young people spending their weekend time there.
But views from this Viking age hill to the Old Town are superb!
Loviisa (Lovisa) was founded 1745 as a fortified settlement on the former border of Sweden-Finland and Russia.
Also the bastions Ungern and Rosen
were started to be built (as well as the Svartholma island fortification).
Today these ruins just outside the town serve as a site for summer theater.

This is not exactly the lighthouse we came for, but it is not such a bad one either, in case you visit with kids it will keep them busy... for a while ;-)

While you walk in the forest, take the path to the top of the hill there is also a view tower where you can climb up and see the nice view of Loviisa.

As this is a relatively small city you can easily take a short hike to the beautiful forest just up the hill.

Välkommen till Lovisa och Borgå!

When leaving Helsinki during the summer for a one day, what could be a better idea than to visit two old typical finnish coastal towns, Loviisa and Porvoo! Both towns are very well known for...

Loviisa is a small town to the east of Helsinki about one hour drive. It has nice nature and sea around and can be a nice place for an hour break if you visit the region.

I had a friend from Eastern Finland visiting me last week and we had already decided last year that we'd visit Porvoo together. When she came I suggested that we'd drive back to Lahti via Loviisa and...

The town was founded in 1745 as a fortified settlement on the Russian-Swedish frontier - Finland at that time being a part of Sweden. The new settlement was named after the queen of Sweden. During the...

Keep your doors locked and windows up

This is Loviisa. And me. And in the background, the bike that cost far too much money in Savonlinna. The expresson says it all. That and the fact I'd been riding since 9am with only one break.
