The old fort is a part of the chain of forts built at the end of the 18th century for defence of St. Petersbourg. In those times Luumäki was still a part of Russia. The inner part of it, near by the Town Hall, is in best condition, is 650 x 800 m and the outermost parts are today in the center of houses in Taavetti. The citadel has been renovated in the last years by the National Board of Antiquities and Historical Monuments
