If you believe what was true in the "old days" and I don't mean your father's (oh, when we were young...), no, I'm referring to little earlier times, then these sorts of round and deep holes in solid rocks could have been made only by something like the hiisi - as strong and cunning.
Originally in finnish folklore a hiisi was not a bad spirit nor a gobblin, but only with Christianity these pagan believes and symbols were turned into peorative and evil monsters.
Indeed these holes are quite appealing to one's illusion.
