In Porvoo we were lucky enough to meet a famous local VT member, who showed us around and even led us to the hidden gems of the local cuisine.
"Nakkeja, pikkulämpimiä" is a Snack Bar, which is known as "Nakki Kustaa" among the locals.
I ordered a Lihapiirakka which is a warm minced meat pie with homemade mustard.
My Finnish VT friends had Nakkis (Nakkimakkara), which are Frankfurter Sausages with ketchup and homemade mustard.
UPDATE 2011: Unfortunately Nakki Kustaa has closed down now.
The Restaurant Ship Glückauf is a steam sailing ship which was built at the end of the 19th century. You can enjoy all sorts of tasty meals on the ship or in an open air pavillion next to the ship. On sunny summer afternoons the deck is mainly used as a cafe, where you can relax with a drink while watching the world go by. It is opened every day in summer, but only on request during the rest of the year.
This is really unique restaurant.
The food they do is mixed (Mediterranean, French, Finnish food and some Eastern influence...). It is quite expensive but highly appreciated. This restaurant was chosen among the best restaurants in Finland
Normally, at summer time I enjoy a cider on their terrace, which has a beautiful view down to the river Porvoo (as the restaurant is situated up on a hill). Don't miss the view! At winter you'll have to enjoy your dinner inside tho'.
Favorite Dish: I have eaten a fish dish there and it was delicious!
If you are looking for good food and good value for money, this is your place.
It is perfectly located in the Old Town and it has around 60 seats. It is pretty busy place during lunch hour and both local and tourists have found the place. Definately good value for the money!
They do lunches and have a menu. It is not a gourmet-place but the food is home made kind of food. They serve typical Finnish home made food for lunch. You may choose from their menu also, like escalope of veal!
The lunch prices are from six to ten euros.
Open 1.5.-31.8. :
Mon-Sat 8am-5pm, Sun 10am-5pm
At other times:
Mon-Sat 8am-4pm, Sun 10am-4pm
It would be hard to find better value for your money in Porvoo. ;-) My favorite place when I'm hungry and want to eat out.
Favorite Dish: Meatballs with smashed potatoes.
Porvoon Paahtimo is located by the river and next to the bridge. You can not miss the red tile, four floor storehouse when entering to Porvoo from Helsinki.
Summer or winter this bar&cafe has a special athmosphere! It is not a typical Finnish style cafe but it is worth a visit if you fancy a cappuccino, cafe latte, beer or a cider.
Favorite Dish: At winter my favorite drink is a hot chocolate with 2cl mint liqueur. It is so nice to get out of the cold weather and darkness into a this Warm, cosy, red tile bar&cafe!
At summer time (may - august) my choise is a cider on the terrace or on their "terrace boat" .
They do not serve food... sandwiches but no food.
Delicious cakes, sandwiches...
The "cafe" is in an old wooden house, which makes the ambience special. It is crowded on especially on winter Sundays. At summertime it is very popular also.
At summer time they have a terrace outside and it is at the back yard in between the old wooden houses.
Their webpages are only in Finnish for the time being but maybe you want to check them out? Therefore their webaddress is here, for you.
Favorite Dish: Any cake they have! As they all, to my understanding, are made there.
I must admit that we didn't eat here, but at least we had a close look at the restaurant from the inside and outside.
The restaurant building is an old wooden log house from the 18th century, therefore the rooms offer a special historical atmosphere. In summer time the terrace invites people for a rest.
We had nowhere near enough time to stop and eat while in Porvoo since we were scheduled to have lunch a the Savijarvi Manor House in Sipoo any way. But just to give you an idea of the variety of cafes and restaurants in Porvoo, I will name a few that looked appealing for your perusal:
"Restaurant Hanna Maria" - attractive yellow building located in old town, multi-lingual staff; indoor and outdoor seating. Average price for lunch (2005) is 5 -9 Euros.
Address: Valikatu 6, Old Town Porvoo
"Cafe/Order Restaurant Levinin Kellari" - "A unique brick vault space for 60 people by the riverside in Porvoo, bordering the marina for visiting boats." Outdoor seating in summer. You can even rent a bicycle here for 4 Euros (2005 prices) for the day.
"Cafe Restaurant Joella" - Located in Old Porvoo, serving lunch from 11 to 3pm. Steaks, salads, and hot snacks, also serves alcoholic drinks. Indoor and outdoor seating. Hours differ for winter and summer.
"Hesburger" - Dying for an American-style hamburger?? Check out Hesburger located in the Shopping Center at Lundinkatu 12, Porvoo. Double Cheeseburgers, fries, icecream Coke and extended serving hours!! Check out email@example.com
"Tea and Coffee Shop Helmi "- Located in a formerly wealthy home of the 1800's. Try specialties such as Russian-style tea, Runeberg's tarts, chocolate salon and assorted alcoholic drinks. Located at Valikatu 7, Old Town Porvoo.
I'm afraid I have some difficulty in writing down the name of this place, but is very easy to find. It’s located right on the river Bank, and has an esplanade inside
The river, on a transformed boat. I only had a beer, to rest a little and catch some sun.
The national poet, J. L. Runeberg, enjoyed for breakfast a sweet tart, baked by his wife Fredrika, with a snaps. The tart is baked of bun and bread crumbs, moistened with punch and topped with apple jam. The tart is still sold in many cafés of Old Porvoo.
The day of Runeberg is 5th February.
The restaurant athmosphere is classy and like no other in Porvoo. The building is jugent style and so the rooms are spacious and high.
Some days they provide live piano music (a student playing).
Favorite Dish: Cafe Cabriole provides lunches (very delicious) Mon-Fri between 10.30-13.00 from a buffet table with economical price, if I remember correctly it is 7 euros per person... worth every cent!
Their cakes are most delicious ones. They have different big sortiment, like cheese cakes, berry cakes etc.
They also do salty pies (comes with sallad) and filled rolls.
Cappuccinos, cafe lattes, finnish coffee, espressos, wine, liquires, cognac etc.
I can highly recommend this classy cafeteria!
This charming place serves fresh salads and small portions of snacks, coffee, cakes, beer, wine, spirits in the 17th century building with a view to the river. Very friendly staff.
Favorite Dish: We had chicken and French fries, which were good though nothing special.
This is probably the best classic and one of the oldest restaurants in Porvoo. It is just across form the famous Porvoo Cathedral. We been here with two VT friends and tasted from the classic and traditional Finnish menu. They also have great selections of wines to chose from.
Favorite Dish: Fish of the day.
This restaurant has to be one of the best in Porvoo, its located in Old Town in a beautiful 18th century building next to the church which was once the Judges Chambers. The menu specializes in game and Finnish dishes.
For a great cup of coffee go to Porvoo Coffee Roastery which is located beside the shore houses in Old Town. It has excellent views and the building is gorgeous, and so is the coffee.
Favorite Dish: Coffee
