    Lost? Not any more...

Are you lost in Porvoo? No worries, You will see these signs around the town which tells you which way to go.

It is easy to come Porvoo. By car it takes about 40 min from Helsinki. Park your car near to the church (no parking fee ) and you are already in the heart of old town. If you don't have car you can take a bus from Helsinki and it takes about 1 hour to get Porvoo. Porvoo is situated on the E 18 highway. Regular bus traffic between the capital and Porvoo is an easy and fast travelling option.

We arrived in Porvoo by bus and then we just walked around and saw the main attractions in Old Town which is pretty compact and close to bus, ferry and train stations.

There are lots of cobblestone streets so wear comfortable shoes, also have in mind you’ll have to walk uphill for the Old Town.

We saw some tourists using bicycles riding not only in town but mainly near the river.

    how to go there

    driving to Porvoo

    By bus
You can take bus from Helsinki central bus station, there are 2-4 buses per hour and the ticket is about 11euro, the ride take about an hour. We were staying on east suburb of Helsinki so we took it from Siilitie metro station paying 9.30e (the bus fare in Finland is counted on the distance). Express buses don’t stop there as they go directly to Porvoo before the continue further east (but they cost 13.20e from central bus station)

    By train
Although there’s no regular passenger train to Porvoo you can take train to Kerava(20’ by train from Helsinki) and then the special excursion trains from Kerava (steam locomotives or comprising former VR diesel railcars from the 1950s) operate on Saturdays (july/august only). It departs from Kerava at 12.10, the ride takes 90’ and costs 15euro. Return time at 16.00. Too much wasted time for us.

    By boat
If you a romantic type you can reach Porvoo by boat with m/s runeberg cruise or the m/s RoyalCat. It runs during the summer only (may to septemper, 3-5 days per week) and costs 22,50e one way (33e return). The problem is that it takes 3,5 hours departing at 10.00am and returns at 16.00, so you wont have much time on Porvoo itself.
During Saturdays you can but the boat/train combo ticket (33e) going there by boat from Linnalaituri in Helsinki market square and return back by train.

    By car
You can easily drive there from Helsinki to Porvoo in 40’ by the motorway, Porvoo is on highway E18, if you go through highway 170 it will take 70’ but its more scenic

You can also reach this village by taking a cruise from Helsinki harbour on the Royal Line ferry Katerina. Its a great way to see Helsinki archipelago. The boat departs from Market Square in Helsinki.

In summer time the old steamship JL Runeberg operates as a tour to Porvoo, it departs from the waterfront in Helsinki. The boat departs at 10am daily.

All information regarding these trips can be located at the Waterfront or at the Tourist information centre.

    Bus from Helsinki

by aukjejetty Updated May 5, 2003
    Porvoo street

It is an easy daytrip from Helsinki. The bus departs from the Helsinki bus station every 30 minutes and the trip takes about an hour. A returnticket cost me €7,90.

In summer (until the end of August) there is also the historic Porvoo-Museumtrain on Saturdays. The train departs from Helsinki at 10:12am, and from Porvoo at 4:30pm.

Porvoo itself is easy to walk through.

    Transportation

by FinElina Written Aug 16, 2003

There are many ways to reach Porvoo. A bus ride takes an hour or less, straight from Helsinki centre. The buses also stop at Itäkeskus (the shopping centre). By car from Helsinki it takes either a half an hour or an hour, depending on whether you take the newer motorway or the older one. By bike the journey takes about 4 or more hours. There is also a ferry (Runeberg) from Helsinki port to Porvoo where you can take your bike with you.
The best way getting around Porvoo, is by walking or by bike because the streets are very narrow for cars and it can be difficult to find parking lots.

    summer train

It' easy to reach Porvoo if you are in Helsinki. : A good half an hour’s drive takes you from downtown Helsinki to Porvoo, situated on the E 18 highway. Regular bus traffic between the capital and Porvoo is an easy and fast travelling option. Check out the timetables from www.matkahuolto.fi or www.expresbus.com

But in the summer time you can even try museum train. There is still railwyas between helsinki nd Porvoo, altough there haven't been any train traffic in last 60 yers. But in the summer time you can go to porvoo with this wonderful museum train called Lättähattu. And if you want, you can travel back to Helsinki by boat.

Porvoo is very small and obviously you can walk and see everything by foot. Just be aware that in the old town its also old stone streets and you will not be very comfortable with high heels

This is very new sightseeing car-train, I am not sure about this tour quality or the price but as this old city is so small anyway you can really just walk anywhere in this place.
