Eating black sausage at the waterfront in Tampere by AbbyL This is a tradional regional dish in Tampere. It's saugage made with pig's blood and barley, wrapped in real animal gut. It really does taste better than it sounds - I was pleasantly surprised. You can buy it at the market, or at stalls at the city's waterfront. It's served wrapped in paper, with a big blob of lingonberry jam. A perfect lunchtime snack - and really cheap too. If you want to blend in with the locals, make sure you add a carton of milk to your order. Leave a Comment

Some "mustamakkara" on our dining table :) by Janni67 If you’re looking for something local to eat cheap, head for the many sausage stalls which sell the Tampere speciality known as "mustamakkara" (black sausage). You can also buy it hot from almost every food shop in Tampere. Even in the international context of sausages, this local delicacy has won several distinguished awards. The characteristic black colour is the effect of blood and rye or barley among the ingredients. Traditionally, this sausage was consumed with cold milk and lingonberry jam. Today, Boisset Cotes du Rhone has been designated as the correct wine to go with it :D Leave a Comment

In Tampere and in Finland generally, people are quite shy, introverted and not so polite for 'strangers'. You will soon realise that they don't apologize if they just pushed you in the queu in the super market etc. Usually we don't meant to be rude, it's just how we Finns are. When you get to know us better you realise that we are actually very frendly and trustworthy people. :-) Leave a Comment

by LysDor More infos... Tampere is the third largest town in Finland (ca 190 000 inhabitants), situated 180 km from Helsinki. It's surrounded by beautiful lakes. You can still see the Tampella-Finlayson factory area of the 19th century, which also used to be pictured in the Finnish 20-mark bill. The old industrial areas have been vitalized and are now full of life and activities. You will find many small restaurants, pubs, sport and fitness centres. Official site of Tampere City Tampere Hall The LENIN Museum Sara Hilden Museum Typical Tampere dialect words (only in finnish) Hatanpää Doll Museum My two architect friends Tiina and Simo had their marriage reception in this museum. A beautiful old wooden house with a supreme doll and ancient children's toys collection as well as epoque clothes. Beside the lovely dinner all guests could also visit the museum for free! Eppu Normaali and Popeda together by Turska In Finland most young people know what is"manse-rock".We call Tampere"Manse"(some people used to say, that this is Manchester of Finland),and from Tampere there have come lots of popular bands. Some of them have played from 1970´s and some are the "new Manse-rock".Some people don´t want to say those new ones Manse-rock,but if you ask younger people, they do.I really don´t have opinion. If I must choose,I like Eppu Normaali best of these. But their older songs from 1980´s are much better tahn new ones, and I prefer other kind of music more-but these first three bands bring me back to my teenage-memories.. http://www.eppunormaali.fi/ http://www.popeda.com/ http://www.juiceleskinen.fi/r /> Here are the younger ones: http://www.negative.fi/site/r /> http://www.uniklubi.net/ http://www.myspace.com/flinchband Those others, except Juice Leskinen, you might see,if you want and happen to be here at right time.Juice has passed away few years ago.

by Sininen or a dialect really. There's a small dictionary called: Pipa päässä rotvallir reunalla' if you want to learn more of this unique dialect. Here are some useful words with which you can impress local people: Moro (or morjes, morjens, morjensta, ***, ***) - hello All above you can use when departing but the following only when you leave: morom moro, se om moro or sommoro he (you can also use 'tosso' - when giving something to somebody (please take this). In Finnish you'd say 'Ole hyvä' kakko - bread riävä - bread made of barley koree - pretty kummi - rubber, gum (in Finnish kummi is a godmother/father!) käskee - invite (in Finnish käskeä means command) Mikänyo - what's the matter? Mää - I Sää - you (Sää in Finnish is weather) Oho - I am very sorry Onnikka - bus Paskysye - Please find out Perna - potato Porata - cry (in Finnish porata means to drill) Puari - small shop Ronkeli - fussy Soukka - doctor of venereal disease Suvi - kesä Topata - eat sweet buns with coffee Tumput - wooden gloves Tunnyjjo - Oh, come now! Tänäpänä - today Täälä - here Usiampi - many Valakata - choose Vihrovvimme - Finally! I used to hate Tampere dialect when I was a teenager and was ashamed when my parents used it, but now I've grown very fond of it and other dialects, which I think are precious things and should be maintained. by Gili_S The Tampere Black Blood Sausage (Musta Makkara) is famous nation wide, you can get them ready at the market or in some grills around. I even had it in the hotel breakfast, so be sure to try that one when visiting here. Leave a Comment
