As if the quirky Lenin Museum (see my "Things to do" section) wasn't enough, Tampere also has its own Spy Museum!
What makes this museum stand out is its many interactive gadgets. You actually get to try out equipment that was used by the spies! We got to scan our passports and see all their hidden images, play with our voices. There was also a challenge in the form of a code that had to be broken down to open a safe at the entrance of the museum; if you could open the safe, you won what was inside! Unfortunately, neither us nor any other visitor succeeded during our visit... :(
For the more intellectual, the museum also contains detailed biographies of famous spies, including Mata Hari and the man believed to have inspired the James Bond character (I forget his name).
The Spy Museum recently moved to Satakunnankatu 18, just west of the Finlayson area. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on weekdays from September to April, when it opens at 12 p.m.
