When I was in Finland I had a railpass (valid for 3 countries - Finland, Sweden and Norway, for any five days travel over 2 months). If you're trying to travel cheaply, then rail passes are a great way to go.

The trains in Finland are one of the best I've been on. They're big, clean, the seats are confortable and there is plenty of leg room. There were announcements before every station (which not all trains do), which was helpful.

By train in Finland is a great way to travel.

    Travelling to and from Helsinki

There are frequent connections between Helsinki and Tampere both by bus and by train. The cost is roughly the same for both modes of transportation, but even if I had to pay more to take the train, I would.

Not only is the trip shorter (slightly less than 2 hours by train, which is 30-40 minutes less than by bus), but the train station is closer to the main downtown attractions if you plan to get around by foot.

Another practical reason for taking the train is that the Tampere Tourist Information Office is located inside the train station. You can stop there and get all the information you need before exploring the town.

You can obviously fly www.finnair.com or by Ryanair www.ryanair.com from London.
But as I assume that you will come from Helsinki or Turku first, then you can take a train www.vr.fi or a a bus www.expressbus.com
I managed to hitchhike many years ago but it is not very common here.

There are trains from Helsinki almost every hour or so. A great place also for a quick visit, since the earliest trains back to Helsinki leave around 4.30 am. So you'll have time for a nite time snack after your last drink before the train leaves!
It's not a big town. That's why it's ideal for some bar hopping. You can crawl your way to the next.

Take a train from anywhere in Finland, or fly from anywhere in the world! Taxi and bus takes you to Tampere center from Pirkkala airport in half an hour.
Take a bus, or a taxi. Taxis are expensive though...:(
