Stockmann Jumbo: Smallest of its kind

by nomadig Updated Apr 4, 2011
    Stockmann Jumbo

Stockmann Jumbo is the latest and the smallest Stockmann department store in Finland -- I'm not counting the outlets at the airport. Despite the size, the store caters for all aspects of living. There is also a miniscule Alko store next to the grocery department.

For the uninitiated: Stockmann is the top-notch department store chain in Finland, Baltics and St. Petersbourg region. Finns usually go there to find anything that they haven't found somewhere else, including haute couture fashion, electronics, street clothes, etc.

The Jumbo store has an additional perk of being close to the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. If you are stuck there or have a couple of hours to spend, consider taking a taxi or a bus to Jumbo and spend some time shopping happily.

    Jumbo: Shopping near the airport

by nomadig Written May 23, 2006
    Inside Jumbo (older part)

Jumbo shopping mall has a dualistic nature; the new part looks very polished and dandy, and the older part is sort of a metal barn.

The location near the Helsinki-Vantaa airport makes the mall a good destination for people sleeping in an airport hotel, as after checking in you can still go and shop for a couple of hours (until 21.00 that is, except on Saturdays and non-summer Sundays, excluding Sundays on December :). Confused? Good. That seem's to be the aim of the lawmaker in Finland.

Anyhow, the mall has Stockmann department store, several clothing stores, including Zara, and a couple cafés and restaurants. One of the perks is Classic Pizza Restaurant that makes the best pizzas I've encountered in Finland.

    Kirjatori: Bargain books

by nomadig Written May 13, 2006
    Kirjatori in Jumbo

Kirjatori is the biggest bargain books chain in Finland. They buy excess books from the publishers and sell them on low price. All the books are new, though sometimes they have been sitting in a warehouse for years.

The store in Vantaa is located in the newer part of Jumbo shopping mall, on the second floor quite near Stockmann. It is a replica of other Kirjatori stores: fully packed with books and no frills whatsoever.

Note that the books are not always cheapest here, but you can find good deals in the normal bookstores, too. Most of the books are in Finnish, but there is usually a few in English.

    Exit: Bright childrenwear

by nomadig Written May 8, 2006
    Exit store in Jumbo

If you are looking for quality clothing for your children, pay a visit to Exit shop in Jumbo shopping mall. The Danish brand shop is stocked full with bright colours and nice designs for the younger generation.

There are clothes for both girls and boys, and some of the stuff can be worn by both -- a welcome change to the usual disneyesque baby pink and baby blue gender-branded garments.

The clothes are of good quality and that shows in the pricetag. Finland is maybe not the best place to buy children garments, no matter which shop you go.

    At the airport

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you happened to travel by flight, you can leave some of your shopping for the airport. Some items will be cheaper there, especially if you fly out of the EU, as you will be entitle to pay tax free for items.

What to buy: Alcohol for example will be half price. Cosmetics items will be cheaper as well.
Penna Design and Kalevala products are available here as well.
