The real Santa´s home

by finlandia

Finland (http://www.gonowfinland.com) is the home country real Santa Claus (Weihnachtsmann, Papa Noel, Father Christmas, joulupukki). Santa can not live on the North Pole. There is nothing to eat for his reindeer there. So Santa lives on Korvatunturi (Ear Mountain, a fell, i.e. an arctic treeless mountain, http://www.korvatunturi.fi) in Finland. On the home page of Korvatunturi you find games and puzzles, questions about Santa Claus, recipes from Mrs Claus, Korvatunturi Club etc. You should absolutely visit Santa Park (http://www.santapark.fi) in Rovaniemi. The main post office of Santa Claus is in Rovaniemi, too. Finnish Santa receives about 600,000 letters per year from over 150 countries. Through the years Finnish Santa Claus has received eight million letters! He hopes to get real letters this year, too. Santa's address is 'Santa Claus, FIN-96930 Arctic Circle, Finland'. Santa´s...

Messy problem

by magor65

Finland is a very clean country. The 'messy' problem made by dogs has been solved in towns by providing special bins and bags. There are also ' dog's parks' surrounded by fence, in which our four-legged friends can run freely. I haven't seen any dogs in children's playgrounds, something which is a problem in my country.

Travelling by car

by magor65

If you travel in Finland by car, you will probably cover long distances, just as we did. But it's not a problem because the roads are very good, traffic is not big and there are lots of nice places to stop for a while and have a rest. You may choose a car park by a restaurant or a place like the one in the picture.

Finnish houses

by magor65

Typical Finnish houses are small, red and made of wood. There are no fences around them and they all have sauna inside. So simple and alike outside, inside they may hide rich collections of souvenirs or other bits and pieces. For example my friend in Rovaniemi has several thousand owls.

Delicious and Refreshing Cider

by sinequanon

When in Finland try the Cider. It has an aromatic light taste of apple or pear and it is beautifully refreshing in the summer. At bars it is served in long elegant glasses but it is equally great straight from the bottle after the sauna. My favourite brand is Hartwall's Upcider!

Food

by Pomska

What is typical Finnish food? Hard question. Actually you can find almost any kind of food in Helsinki. There are restaurants serving food from mexican to russian.I think a typical Finn would like meatballs (also typical Swedish food), potatoes, any kind of meat and fish, bread and dairy products.

Short history

by Pomska

From the 12th to the 19th centuries Finland has been a province and a grand duchy under Sweden. After 1809 Finland was an autonomous grand duchy of Russia. Finland declared the complete independency in 6th of December 1917.

Moomin

by Pomska

Japanese people know Finland because of Moomins. There's even pictures of Moomins on the Finnair plane to Tokio. The first Moomin book was published in 1945 and it was called Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen (Moomin and the destructive flood). They were created by the writer Tove Jansson. Today they are known all over the world.

Language

by Pomska

Finnish language has rolled r's, long vowels, and Scandinavian letters (ä, ö, å) which are some characteristics of this language. Finnish is spoken only in Finland, and among Finns abroad. But Finland has two mother tongues, Finnish and Swedish. But I have to say that over 90 % of Finns speak Finnish as their mother tongue.Finnish has borrowed words from, for example, Swedish, Russian, and German. Today it is mainly influenced by English.
