Kuopio is famous for its sports centre and tourism. Since some years World Cup in ski jumping takes place here (The second jump of Nordic Tournament)
The Puijo-ski jump is located at 150m high hill Puijo, famous as well for its Puijo View Tower (This tv-tower was builit in 1963 and it is 75m high).
If you are in Finland during winter time, dont miss this famous ski jump event and enjoy view from the tower!!!! Leave a Comment

The market place of Kuopio is one of the nicest and the most lively ones in Finland. Here are the Town Hall and Market Hall located. Also you will find the famous „Veljmies“ (Brother) statue, which plays an imporatant role one the 1 of may, so called Vappu day, students big party holiday. The square is surrounded by a big amount of shops where you can buy almost everything you need.
We were there on Saturday in late july. The market place was full of people relaxing at small cafes or buying different souvenirs and food at the square shops. It was the time of strawberries and raspberries, also black berries could be found there as all other possible season vegetables. It was a sunny day, all people were friendly and happy and we also enjoyed our stay there a lot! Leave a Comment

Go to this city block museum, Korttelimuseo, and enjoy the atmosphere of a century ago. Very interesting displays of craftsmen's tools of trade such as weaver, tailor, shoemaker, pharmacist and so on in several buildings from mid 19th century till 1930. Sometimes, they have work exhibits, i.e. people showing how things were done in the past. Also changing exhibitions of photography. Really a lot to see and there's also a nice cafeteria should you feel peckish. If the weather is nice, you can drink your coffee in their lush garden. Leave a Comment

This is something unique to cruise on a slow-pace steam-boat – a must-try if you are not sea-sick! There are different options from 2 hours' trip with dinner served on board to the possibility of sailing from Kuopio to Savonlinna.
These ships were specially designed for cargo purposes but quickly had also passengers and are well manoeuvreble in narrow locks. I used to go several times for short evening dinner cruises after work – pure pleasure!

One day cruises to * Valamon Luostari * Valamo Monastery
From Kuopio: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9.30 am. Transfer from Palokki pier at 1.10 pm to the Monastery. Return to Kuopio by bus and arrival at 6 pm.
On Monday, Wednesday and Friday departure at 1 pm and back in Kuopio around 9 pm.

If you want to experience monastery life just book a room at Valamo Monastery.
The monastery has accommodation for about 200 guests (please note: no smoking), in its comfortable hotel, the accommodation building of the Lay Academy (also of hotel standard) and two more modest guesthouses. The rooms do not have any radio or television.

This known as the Puijo Tower as well as the Puijo hill where the telecom tower is. It is just up the hill at the highest spot in the city. Good place for some recreation as well for landscape viewing. Leave a Comment
