Market place is the centre of Kuopio

by Anjutka Updated Sep 14, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The market place of Kuopio is one of the nicest and the most lively ones in Finland. Here are the Town Hall and Market Hall located. Also you will find the famous „Veljmies“ (Brother) statue, which plays an imporatant role one the 1 of may, so called Vappu day, students big party holiday. The square is surrounded by a big amount of shops where you can buy almost everything you need.
We were there on Saturday in late july. The market place was full of people relaxing at small cafes or buying different souvenirs and food at the square shops. It was the time of strawberries and raspberries, also black berries could be found there as all other possible season vegetables. It was a sunny day, all people were friendly and happy and we also enjoyed our stay there a lot!

Kuopio market place and the "kalakukko" !

by WanderingFinn Updated Mar 8, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kuopion tori is very well-known by also other Finns from other parts of the country. This is a place where you hear a lot of talking and laughing, see happy people. This city belongs to the Savolax area, where people tend to talk a lot. They have a certain accent in their speach, which is immediately recognized by other Finns. A little bit like Texan is to other Americans ;)

A must in this market place and area is to buy a "kalakukko". It is a nation-famous thing. They taste heavenly and fill your stomache very quickly. They are always fresh. Kalakukko looks like a small American football, it is round and baked-in. The cover has the taste of rye bread, and when you cut it, inside there is delicious fish (vendace/whitefish) and some grease. People cut slices of it to their plates when it is either still warm or warmed up, and put some butter on it to melt down.

    Magnificent views

by nomadig Written Jul 23, 2006

The most interesting place worth visiting near central Kuopio is Puijo tower, located on Puijo hill very close to the town. The tower has excellent views to all directions, over the city itself and to the forests and lakes around it.

The entrance fee is a few euros, and you can enjoy the views from an open air deck or behind glass in cafeteria one level below. There is also a revolving restaurant, but I can't say anything about the food -- the view is grand.

    Ski jump towers

by Zirpsis Written Jul 9, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kuopio has natural hills suited for winter sports and especially the Puijo ski center is world famous. There are international ski jumping competitions every winter. Here's a good chance to see how high the towers really are. They rise above the tree tops. I can't imagine having to climb stairs all the way up carrying your skis and then, with your legs still all wobbly from the climb, you JUMP down. Ok, they probably don't have to climb stairs anymore but even so...

    Kuopio Art Museum

by Zirpsis Written Jul 8, 2006

Something to do for a rainy day: Finnish art at Kuopio Art Museum. This summer there's an exhibition of Ellen Thesleff's paintings and graphic from private collections. I went to see and the works that were displayed were just beautiful. However, I was a bit dissappointed in the limited number of works on show.
    Open tues - fri 10 - 17, wed 10 - 19 and sat-sun 11 - 17. Entrance fee was 3 eur.

    Flowers and plants at Marikko

by Zirpsis Written Jul 5, 2006

Kuopio University Botanical Garden is called Marikko and it's rather a new building with a modest collection of plants. Nice outdoor settings though with a pond and all. And don't miss the beautiful lake shore. Inside, there was also a nice Japanese garden but, again, not very large. On the positive side, there's no entrance fee.

Panorama view over Kuopio and Lake Kallavesi

by Zirpsis Updated Jul 5, 2006

Puijo tower stands high on a hill and it is the landmark of Kuopio. You can see it from afar and, naturally, you have great views from the tower's top landing. Entrance fee 3,50. There's also a cafeteria if you feel like having a bite to eat. It's not too much more expensive than elsewhere. A gift shop with tower miniatures and pictures of the tower in almost anything imaginable from plates and mugs to wooden artefacts.

    How people used to live

by Zirpsis Updated Jul 4, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Go to this city block museum, Korttelimuseo, and enjoy the atmosphere of a century ago. Very interesting displays of craftsmen's tools of trade such as weaver, tailor, shoemaker, pharmacist and so on in several buildings from mid 19th century till 1930. Sometimes, they have work exhibits, i.e. people showing how things were done in the past. Also changing exhibitions of photography. Really a lot to see and there's also a nice cafeteria should you feel peckish. If the weather is nice, you can drink your coffee in their lush garden.

    Kauppa-Halli

by brazwhazz Updated Dec 11, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Kauppahalli was built in 1902 by J. V. Stromberg (who would also built the Kuopio Museum a few blocks away), is a very attractive indoor market hall. Inside you will find many stands selling a wide variety of local foods as well as some souvenir shops. Before entering, be sure to check out all the animal carvings on the outside!

The market hall is an good place to visit not only because of its architecture, but also because it is frequented by both locals and tourists and therefore has retained its authenticity.

    Kuopio Museum

The Kuopio Museum, built in 1907, is, along with the Kauppa-Halli (market hall), one of the city's Art Nouveau treasures. The museum presents permanent archeological and cultural displays as well as many temporary exhibitions.

We didn't go inside, but the exterior in itself is a tourist attraction.
