The duration of the lake cruise was too long for us, but if you have time, you may want to consider a Savonlinna-Kuopio cruise aboard the MS Puijo ferry. The lakelands deserve to be visited on a boat and if both cities are on your itinerary, this trip may be just the thing for you. There are other stops along the way but I can't recommend any, having not seen any of them.
The ferry service typically operates from late June to mid-August. Departures from Savonlinna are Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9 a.m.; conversely, departures from Kuopio are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 9 a.m. In both cases, the cruise lasts about 10? hours and ends around 7:30 p.m.
For more information, check out the excellent online Savonlinna tourist guide at http://www.savonlinnatravel.com/brochures/english_savonlinna.pdf and search for "MS Puijo".

Such a lovely city, not too big and a nice warm summer day, best was to walk, and as you can see, yes, it is warm enough in Finland for sandals on July.

You can get to Kuopio by flight, train or bus. I assume the easiest and not too expensive should be the train. Here in the photo the railway station
