for nature and quiet life lovers an excellent place
The war time communications centre named "Lokki" (Finnish; means seagull) was a tightly secret place. It was used for the purposes of war time communications of the Headquarters. The building work started in 1939, and the comms centre inside a cave inside a rocky hill was in use during the Continuation War.The centre mediated the calls to the war...more
Carl Gustav Emil Mannerheim has, perhaps more than any other individual person, impressed the history of Finland, which goes far back to the Middle Ages and is now reaching out towards integrated Europe and the globalized world.Three great eras of Finnish history meet in the person of Mannerheim: 1) the period of autonomy (1809-1917), in which the...more
Kenkävero is a year-round attraction on the shore of Lake Saimaa in Mikkeli. Their pride and joy is Finland`s largest and most beautiful vicarage. The carefully restored buildings are located in a pleasant natural setting, just a short distance from the city centre.Their exhibitions present crafts and skills. Demonstrations inspire visitors to try...more
At the railway station one can look at the Field MArshall Mannerheim's train car. Unfortunately, one can just look at it it, but not enter it. During the WW2 Mikkeli was an important place.Don't forget to see the Mannerheim statue, removed from a park to the market place. The Field Marshall is wearing the wartime officer's uniform.more

This is the best restaurant in Mikkeli - you can get great authentic Italian pizzas, Mexican bits and pieces, but the steaks... oh man, they are out of this world! All very reasonably prized, centrally located and includes a salad buffet as a starter - you cannot go wrong with this place! Great beer and wine selection - English speaking and...more

In the summer, and only in the summer you can buy wonderful fresh forest berries in the market, there are many kinds, my favourites are the blueberries, cranberries and cloudberries ;-)
The market place is very central in Mikkeli. People gather there, and here you can also hear some of the Mikkeli dialect.
Don't be afraid if people come and actually talk to you: they mean no harm, they're just friendly. Even if you don't have a common language.
The old placew within the town is called Kenkävero. It's possible to buy textiles and other items, such as dried herbs and delicatessen, at the shop. If you like gardening, this place offers much to see for you: the garden plants come from this area, they are strong and grow well. Such things as "Burning Love" ( palava rakkaus), the old herbs that...more
For those who want to folow a horse race, MIkkeli is one of the places to head to. The race track is situated within the town itself.
A very colourful spectacle, and the town is humming with excitement on the racing day.
I have been to Mikkeli about 13 times, and I find this town very downcast city/town. Not allot to do here, but in the winter they get some good snow falls which is great for winter sports. They have a good Ice Hockey team called Jukurit (web link www.jukurit.fi/)
If you like snooker/pool you can have a game in a bar just in the town. But if you want to buy some souvenirs of your visit in Mikkeli /Finland you wont find them here, if you do email asap. This town of Mikkeli has some great views when you go for walks into the woods. But after been here so many times, I have to give this town my No.One vote for the most cheerless town in the world. I think the people are nice, but not allot of people have English in the shops.
(Winter Its gets dark about 2.30PM, Summer long day sometimes 1 or 2AM day light) here are some images from this city/town
