Village life in Tervo

Tervo is SMALL - but beautiful. If you are a foreigner in Tervo a) you are visiting some friends, b) you have rented a summer cottage in the area/ booked a holiday in Lohimaa, or c) you are a berry picker working here :)

In winter Tervo offers action in Lohimaa where the tourists take part in snow mobile safaries etc. The locals ski cross-country (there are ready made tracks but no ski-rental), ice-fish (free for everybody, the local gas station sells the equipment), study, visit the library (with a free internet, too), watch tv, visit friends.

In summer, however, there is still Lohimaa and its tourist action, but you can also practice golf, swim (there is a nice sandy beach by the church!), row, paddle, hike, fish... Rental services www.lohimaa.fi or www.hiisiretket.com - mostly for groups but it is worth trying even alone.

Restaurants

Lohimaa or Katriina-Kesti: two choises of restaurants

There are two choises in Tervo: either the very basic local lunch restaurant+cafe+bar in the centre of the village (at the basement of Sale grocery store), or the classier fish restaurant in Lohimaa some 15 km away by the Äyskoski rapids. Katriina-Kesti serves basic lunches and bar food, in Lohimaa you'll find local fish dishes including salmon and whitefish muikku in rather impressive surroundings. Both can be recommended but for different reasons and for different occasions!
P.S. In Lohimaa you can also fish your own salmon and have it prepared the way you want.

Favorite Dish: In Lohimaa the fish soup is perfect. Also their "try it all" starter is big enough for a light lunch.

What to Pack

Tervo is small

Luggage and bags: While packing, remember that Tervo is a small village. There are two small grocery shops with a limited selection. There you can also buy socks but not blouses (well, you can try the local flea market), you may find the shampoo you are used to but probably not, etc. Pack your favorites with you, be satisfied with what you can get - or be prepared to shop in Kuopio, Suonenjoki, Jyväskylä - even Vesanto has a wider variety of some goods. Or ask the shop to order what you want. Don't forget to ask locals, they know what to get and from where.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Clothing for outdoors, water resistant shoes in spring, summer and autumn, and proper warm winter boots in winter - there is going to be snow.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: There is a pharmacy in the village. If they don't have something they'll order it for you.

Photo Equipment: Best to have your own.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Some of the outdoor stuff could probably be rented in Lohimaa. Fishing gear can be bought in the local gas station.
