    Flying to Jyväskylä?

by Vesanto Updated Feb 22, 2015

Jyväskylä has a small mainly domestic airport in Tikkakoski, some 20 km from the centre. The airport has a cafe and a free wi-fi but not e.g. a cash point.

The nearest international airport is situated in Tampere. There are good bus and train connections between Jyväskylä and Tampere. The biggest international airport is situated in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. The flight from Helsinki to Jyväskylä takes about 35 minutes and the drive from the airport to the centre of Jyväskylä roughly 20 minutes. Check the flights http://fi-en.flybe.com (2015).

There is no bus connection or airport shuttle. At the airport there is a "Taxi phone". The taxi from the airport to the town centre costs about 40 eur (Visa accepted) and the trip takes about 15-20 minutes. You can (and you should, if you are in a hurry) book a taxi in advance, min. 30 min. before the trip by calling the taxi centre +358 100 6900 (this costs 7.10 eur/2015).

If you want to share a taxi with other customers to some other address on the way, use Airport-Taxi service. It must be ordered at least two hours in advance by calling +358 100 6900.

You can rent a car but it has to be done in advance as the service point is open only on demand.

  • The local way of getting around

by kirahvi Updated Jul 15, 2009

The best way to get around the city is definitely by bike. There are good bike routes in all parts of the city, and because the city is small the distances aren't too bad either. The bus tarifs are way through the roof, so especially during the academic year you can't help noticing all the students riding their bikes. But it's not only for the younger demographic, mind you! Hop on a bike and go for a ride.

    Bus

    by Gili_S Written Dec 23, 2007

In Jyväskylä and around there are only buses as public transportation, no metro or trams as it is really not so big town, and when you take a bus to the suburb, you might need to wait long time in the bus stop to come back to the city.

    Train

    by Gili_S Written Dec 23, 2007

By train is the easiest way to get here, there are many daily trains to Jyväskylä, however, I usually arrive by car here, no matter how much snow & ice was on the road.
